I'm trying to find out the name of a sitcom I remember from the early 1980s when I was a kid.
I think it may have only run for one or two series but revolved around an Indian bloke who buys a cornershop that some punk rocker guy was squatting in. He lets the squatter stay upstairs and the two become mates.
I can't remember too much more about it except that I remember the Indian shopkeeper was always calling the punk guy Kermit because of his green spiky hair.
I've tried for the life of me to remember what it's called but need help.
So help...please anyone!
Trying to find the name of 1980s sitcom
Blimey. Not ringing any bells here, and Google's not helping. Do you remember anything else about the show? Would it have been for kids perhaps? Are you certain it was British?
It is a hard one, the only 1980s Asian sitcom I can think of is Tandoori Nights, that came out in 1985 and was Britain's first Asian comedy series. It has nothing to do with a corner shop or does it mention a squatter. Meera Syal was involved and so was a very underated Asian actor called Ishaq Bux, who would often appear in It Ain't Half Hot Mum and was also in an episode of On The Buses. So it could be that. Are you sure it was a sitcom?
Yup it was definitely a pretty light hearted sitcom.
I first saw it New Zealand as a kid sometime in 1986 or 1987, although New Zealand in the 80s was notoriously behind the rest of the world when it came to TV, music etc so it may have even been done earlier in the 80s as the Young Ones didn't screen for the first time in N.Z. untill about 1987.
I know it was definetly English and shortlived ...I can recall seeing about 4 or 5 episodes before it disappeared.
It wasn't particularly edgy or anything just classic early 80s British TV the punk bloke looked kind of like Jacko from Brush Strokes (well if Jacko had had green spiky hair and a studded leather jacket) but I'm pretty certain it was just a passing resemblance and not the actual same guy.
It's been driving me nuts for a couple of years now trying to find the name of it.
I really cannot find anything which remotely sounds like the show you're describing. Are you sure it was British?
Could it be this....doesn't give a lot to go on but there is an allusion to a Punk Squatter and an Asian in one of the blurbs I read:
SORRY, I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF

The great Ishaq Bux, star of many a horror film bit part (VAULT OF HORROR, THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, THE QAUTERMASS CONCLUSION etc) and several episodes of CROWN COURT. And also a man whose name is one of the greatest double entendres ever invented.
As in:
Me (pointing at screen) "Ishaq Bux"
My mate Ian "I'm sure you do."
Ishaq Bux was a great man, and actor in deed. He is also my Grandfather who passed away in 2000.
Really? I thought he was great in the It Ain't Half Hot Mum episodes he was in, and I also thought he was great in the On The Buses episode The Snake. Your Grandfather was certainly a fine actor. Have you seen Tandoori Night with him in it? I haven't, but would like to.

That was the one that came to mind for me.
