I saw this earlier on today somewhere (maybe on TV). Disgusting. No wonder most people hate/distrust the police so much.

My friend just sent this to me and I was just wondering what Dabutt's (and everyone else's) take on this video is.

As you'll see the 15 year old girl in the cell slips her foot out of her sneaker and kicks it in the arresting cop's direction. What follows is shocking to me...but is it acceptable in the eyes of the law I wonder? http://www.flurl.com/video/34709919_cops_beat_the_crap_out_of_15yo_girl.htm

Yeah, but what if there was a bomb in her shoe? Eh? We don't know all the facts. And they didn't beat the crap out of her because the WC is clearly unused in the end - the cop even goes back to check.

This video just made it into the news a day or two ago because it was entered into evidence at the deputy's trial. He's been charged with assault and faces a year in jail and the loss of his job, obviously.

Some pertinent details (that don't matter all the much, as the deputy clearly used excessive force and deserves whatever punishment he receives):

The girl was arrested for stealing a car. She had been verbally abusive since her arrest and kicked her shoes at the cop after being to to remove them. Apparently, the cop was angered because she called him a "fat pig" while she did so.

The girl was not unconscious or seriously injured. She later complained of breathing difficulty, was checked by medical personnel and then booked into a juvenile detention facility.

This in no way negates the fact that the police officers in the football video were following standard procedures nor does it justify the fans' behavior. In this case the suspect was already detained and searched. She was clearly no threat to the officers' safety.

Good to know that arsehole is going to face the music.

I was in no way suggesting this was the same as the football vid - (although you already know my feelings on that) I was just interested to know peoples' views on this particular case. It's incredible to me how many people put their trust in the police to such an extent that they're blinded to what their eyes are actually telling them.

In this case, the evidence is clear. There are no edits. There was no threat. The cop in question needs to lose his badge, as does his colleague for not trying to stop him. However much the girl had been badmouthing the cop, however frustrated he was, whatever the extent of her injuries, he deserves to lose his job and do time for what I see as a cowardly, vicious attack on a far weaker human being.

The sad thing is that this video only came to light after a colleague blew the whistle. And then it took 6 months and a court order to release the footage. How many other incidents like this occur in the thousands of holding cells across the US and elsewhere? Scary stuff.

I could fill up this whole thread with video news articles and YouTube entries about police brutality. But it's just too damn depressing.

That looked to me like he was going back to the wall to check for blood where he'd just bounced her head off it.

Huh? Where did you come up with that and how does it apply to this video?

It came to light one day after it took place in the course of a routine investigation. The system worked exactly as it should - there is no indication whatsoever of a cover-up. Why exaggerate and try to turn it into something that it's not?

It happened 3 months ago, not 6. Why exaggerate? Criminal trials and investigations are notoriously slow and it's almost always a good thing. Thorough investigations take time, why rush them?

What she did in no way excuses the resulting attack, which is all it was. Kicking her shoes at him is also not really accurate if you watch, she sort of insolently flicks it towards them; hardly a kick.

Sometimes the police are wrong, because they're just people.

It's all very nice standing on your soapbox like Rik from The Young Ones, but if you expect any HUGE institution not to have a few dickheads then you're living in cloud cuckoo land.

I was referring to the general way a large percentage of the public seem to react to seeing heavy-handed police officers caught on film. It worries me when people automatically say "they must've deserved it" when confronted with stuff like this. The police are in a highly-priveleged position of power and as such should fall under the highest scrutiny when it comes to abuse of that power.

I got my info from this article, http://forum.nin.com/bb/read.php?31,518630,518699 that states the video only came to light weeks later. So I wasn't exaggerating, merely reporting what I'd read.

Okay, 3 months ago then. Living in the US and having this on the news, you obviously have the advantage over me on this story. The internet's not exactly known for its accuracy.

It's nice to know we're all playing second fiddle to Dabutt. Angry

Not at all old bean. Me and Dabutt don't exactly see eye-to-eye on this subject so I was particularly interested in his take.

Now play that fiddle, boy.

I like this girl. Not if she stole my car though.... :)

Well you do have a mighty purdy mouth... :D

In other dumb cop-related news, check out this vid of an officer mistaking a black man's penis for a concealed weapon. Which I suppose it is! http://www.tooshocking.com/videos/6067/Cops_Mistake_Penis_For_A_Gun

Well what's your solution? How are you going to change human nature?

I think I could. :)

I don't think it's any coincidence that Adolf Hitler was brought up in a very strict way.
