No it doesn't. When it states theories and beliefs which themselves are being disproven every day as fact, and refuses to acknowledge even the remotest possibility that there are things we don't know, or don't fully understand, then it proves it has no right to the respect and faith we all too-often pour upon it.

Christ, you're like some Luddite. Science - by which I assume you mean the scientific community comprising scientists, academics etc - often acknowledges that it may be wrong, and there are in fact things they don't know. Try not to take your view from nineteen fifties B-movies.

Science isn't one person you know Aaron. I'm sure there are some scientists who are as you're saying, and others who are more open. They don't share one huge hive brain.

I love it when we all gang up on Aaron and spray him with our logic jism.
Quote: Aaron @ February 25 2009, 11:57 AM GMTIf there's one thing I've learnt from this thread, it's that science is far
more arrogant than I'd even begun to imagine.
Science has the right to be arrogant unlike most of this thread science has evidence and facts to back it up.
Quote: chipolata @ February 25 2009, 12:00 PM GMTScience has the right to be arrogant. It's actually pretty damned impressive what man can do nowadays.
Ah beat me to it chip...
Quote: chipolata @ February 25 2009, 11:31 AM GMTAnd would you extend that same open-mindedness to religion? And the thousands of people who claim to have seen God or been spoken to by him?
Absolutely. My earlier posts about religion were simply drawing comparisons between the paranormal and religious worlds. I'm completely open-minded as to the existence of some sort of God. I've never seen him or spoken to him, but enough people have had experiences to convince me there might well be something in it. Or there might not be.

Congratulations Sherlock Stott. Perhaps you'd like to tell us that not every northerner is alcoholic, or that not all girls have been pregnant by age 16.

Dr Aaron - Sherlock Stott was stating how you're generalising...
Just thought I'd let you know.

You don't like being picked up on it when you're wrong do you Aaron? You made a a sweeping statement that was obviously far too black and white. I apologise for pointing that out. Now if you'll excuse me I have 10 gallons of gin to get through by this afternoon.

What have movies got to do with anything here? If pointing out that we don't know everything makes me a Luddite, then I'm quite happy to be labelled one.
Aaron, not every northerner is alcholic, and not all girls have been pregnant by 16.

I was merely alluding to the fact that your view of science and scientists is not that different from the knee-jerk dislike of them we saw reflected in nineteen-fifties B-movies. Apologies for being so obtuse.

Huh? You seriously confused, because it's quite obvious what he meant there.

I'm perfectly happy to be corrected. Unlike a number of other people, it seems. It's actually quite sad that you feel the need to point out something which you yourself go on to say is 'obvious' - that I was generalising, and not labelling every single aspect of science and every scientist as so close-minded. I fail to see how anyone can be so obnoxious as to not see that as a given. But, evidently, at least three of you have managed it.

Yes Aaron, that's right. Jesus.
