When Steptoe Met Son

Watched this documentary for the second time last night, first saw it about seven years ago. I have to say in my opinion I think it was laid on a bit thick regarding the bad relationship between Wilfrid Brambell and Harry Corbett. I think the reality was that the two of them just didn't socialise outside the show, but remaining professional while recording, apart from Wilfrid's occasional over-drinking.

The doc seemed to blow things out of proportion. Anyone else seen it?

I've seen it but not knowing either Wilfred Brambell or Harry Corbett, I can't really comment on the accuracy of the documentary.

I think the writers said it was a far fetched documentary just made because neither actor could speak up for the relationship they had with each other.

Yes, you say that, but I think it's fair to say that towards the end of the show, their relationship did badly deterriorate. I mean, look at the Australian tour, they both refused to go back on the same plane.

Think the problem was that the docu glossed over the fact that Corbett and Brambell did work with each other after the Australia tour (as late as 1981 in fact): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSApN1vxrZs

Who'd have thunk it? A documentary sensationalising the facts to make itself more interesting.

I know it's what documentaries do, but they just seemed to stretch the truth so much. The policeman they had talking about Wilf's arrest back in 1962 or 1963 seemed to be full of his own importance, also the Australian tour manager sounded a bit of a knob too.

I don't fully believe the story about them flying home on separate planes either.

What did he get arrested for?

He was arrested for performing a homosexual act on somebody in a public toilet. Wilf didn't do this against this person's will - homosexuality was illegal back then.

According to many sources Brambell didn't perform any act on anyone, but just spent too long in one toilet and smiled at a man who was having a piss, he was then arrested.

Dirty old man

I was in the pub earlier and smiled at a bloke who was having a piss, I was not arrested.

You weren't arrested, but I'll punch you if you do it to me again.
