yes!
I try to do what martin does and develop my characters but unlike martin, I do have to write a few "tester scripts" situations to see whether they gel or are annoying as hell ect ect.
I'm in the same boat as you Leevil, I'm having trouble thinking and Im in a planning zone for a couple of ideas... One's about gambling, so should be some story lines in there.

Sounds like a safe bet. Hey?! yeah...

That joke wasn't worth the gamble.
I think both were craps.
I think its best you get a general plan down for the story before you start. Thats what I did with the script I'm working on at the moment and its really helped to have a plan. The story has changed a lot since the very start and I'm still of my first draft. Plan each individual scene as well otherwise you can end up rattling on. You'll write a couple of pages of what you consider to be a masterpiece and then think "this is absolute tripe".
I wouldn't dream of starting a script unless I knew the overall plot of the series and have a brief outline of everything that needs to happen and be revealed in each scene of an episode. Otherwise you'll just go off on a tangent I find.
It's more of an exercise for character development. Also writing on the fly with allow my witty retorts to flow.
When I wrote a sitcom pilot I realise there was no stroy ark so I created a love interest and made one of the characters black. It seemed like a good idea at the time Still makes me laugh today. The two most amateurish things you can do and I did them both haha.
I've ot and am begining production on a pilot. My reasoning is simple if I'm not willing to put the time and the money into my own work why the f**k will a complete stranger?
This subject is now void for me anyway, 'cos depending on what does or doesn't happen on Thursday my writings days are numbered (for a while).
Bloody Thursday!!
Dare we ask whats happening on Thursday?
I Dare not. It's the typa thing that's ruined my week though!
Thought I'd finished my pilot last week. Went back over the weekend, read it, realised two of the main characters were one dimensional and just spouting jokes. Had to pretty much start again. Bollocks. Always start with the characters, if they don't work, you're f**ked. I knew this anyway, most people on here probably do, but the excitement of getting something finished carried me along. Anyway thought I'd throw my inexperienced hat into the ring. Felt good finishing it last week, feel a bit shit now. Moan moan moan.
