And on a deeper level how many Christian or Jewish countries actively legislate against minorities of any description?

America doesn't allow equal rights to gay couples for adoption and marriage because of its deep Christian roots. Technically that's not actively legislating against a minority but it's still far from fair.

Exactly.

A possible over reaction . . ?!

Sexual assault is not a trifling matter. And scaring someone off with a pistol is also infinitely less violent than slapping them across the face, for instance.

Thats two separate communities who happen to belong to separate sects.

So... why sometimes 'muslim' and sometimes 'moslem'. Are they different things, or just weird alternative spellings?

But they can also be very hateful about groups whose activites they condemn, such as the gay community.

But are they physically hateful, or just vocally? I can't remember the last time I heard of a Cardinal drop-kicking queers on Hampstead Heath.

You'd have to try very hard to pick a fight with a Buddhist.

:D

Alternative. The latter tends to be used and seen as a derogatory term.

Of course it's unfair, but your not seriously comparing it to state persecution? Also China and Russia aetheist have no gay marriage; infact I think they may ban gayness.

It might be a UK thing. I've never seen it written as anything but Muslim here.

First time I saw it was from an American. A retired English teacher, in fact.

Just vocally is almost as bad though. And how many people have been killed by Muslims for not being Muslim? How many non-Christians have been killed in the past for not being Christian? How many Cathlolics have been killed for not being Protestant and vice versa? I can't really see that any group are worse than other. They might be at different stages, but it seems all nations have done this.

Did you ever see the Louis Theraux doc when he stayed with the Christina fundamentalist? They were scary.

Hmm. Like I said, I've never seen it here, but I've seen it many times in UK forums. I thought it was an accepted variant.

I don't wish to sound like I'm sticking up for or attacking any particular faith(s) here, but were the Christian-lead persecutions not in less 'enlightened', 'developed' times?

(I'm not counting Northern Ireland because that's about land, not religion directly.)

Really? I think this is - along with the example I noted - only the second time I've seen it. Certainly only the second it's "registered" with me. I don't recall ever seeing it in a 'real' published form.

An accepted variant according to Collins.

Yeah, though some other countries are still developing. And Islam is a 'new' religion by world religion standards.

Aren't all these disputes just over land and/or power at the end of the day though?

Ancient history aside, as far as I'm aware there's only one major religion out there these days that hangs gays, throws acid in schoolgirls' faces, murders woman because they were raped and beheads people because they belong to another religion - and they do it gleefully and openly.

The difference being that in parts of the Moslem world they are doing it now, whereas I am not particularly worried these days about being burnt at the stake by the Catholics. It is not about religion, it is about what people do in the name of their religion. And Moslems fantics are more dangerous and more enfranchised than their Christian counterparts.

(Though Moslems are still sometimes on the receiving end. I recall once spending an inebriated afternoon in an artists commune outside Baja Luka in the company of a Serbian sculptor who gleefully boasted of the massacre of Bosnian Moslems.)
