Alcohol Page 4

'Common sense is the guy who tells you that you ought to have your brakes relined last week before you smashed a front end this week. Common sense is the Monday morning quarterback who could have won the ball game if he had been on the team. But he never is. He's high up in the stands with a flask on his hip.'

Not relevant really, just love the man!

I drink too... err I drink too... well I drink for some damn reason or other!

I was absolutely bolloxed last night; not feeling noticeably more creative this morning. In fact I think I am going to have a lie down...

This is a cupboard on the wall next to my desk.

And this morning I filled it with these wee fellows.

I think that maybe 1 or 2 drinks can help you when you are at the ideas stage but not with the actual writing. If you have had a really stressful day at work and you were planning to do some writing that evening but when you get home you no longer feel like it then maybe a drink might help relax you and get you in the mood for writing. As for being hungover, that would never work for me, I never feel like doing anything when I'm hungover, even if I did come up with some ideas I doubt that I would feel up to writing them down. In the long term though I don't think that regular drinking is good for comedy. At University I used to drink a fair amount and it often just made me depressed. When I used to go out I used to notice lots of funny little things about the way people behaved and whilst I have been able to use some of this in my writing, unfortunately I have probably forgotten more than I can remember. Maybe if I had written them down when I got home then I would now have a lot of material but then maybe they only seemed funny because I was drunk? Anyway now, several years later, I just drink half a pint of ale each evening and I'm as happy as Larry.

MarcP, the prominent Jagermeister bottles - is that just there for unblocking the toilet? :D

Does alcohol help or hinder the creative process?

And mainly do any of you find that you're particularly creative when you're hungover? Like you're brain is wired differently?

Alcohol and other such substances always hinders me. But snuff and cafeine can be a great help. Comedy and sex. Alcohol increases the confidence and decreases the performance in both cases.

I've always found comedy to have that same affect on my sex life. Teary

I'm a housewife. I notice these things. I notice them in my own house. Then I leave them until someone else does it. :)
