Desert Island Books

Came across this one, and joined in, on another forum. Question is: which ten books would you want to take with you on a desert island? I'll own up to mine later! Already-read or yet-to-read ... doesn't matter. I've been through all my favorites at least twice (bad memory!) and a few have even made it to three-time-reads!

Don't know ten, however Danny Wallace's Yes man is one of the funniest books I have read.

Wake Me When it's Funny - Garry Marshall
Pudd'nhead Wilson - Mark Twain
Enter Laughing - Carl Reiner
The Jack Benny Show - Milt Josefsberg
Smoke - Donald E Westlake
I Owe Russia $1200 - Bob Hope
I Love Her That's Why - George Burns
Wilderness - Robert B Parker
The Late Show - Bill Carter
You're Lucky You're Funny - Rosenthal (Everybody Loves Raymond guy)

Each one contains more than one gem of a one-liner or intellectual thought. The Bob Hope book is an exercise in gag writing quoting many of the routines specially written for shows during America's wars.

On a desert island? Anything by Ray Mears.

I don't think i've read ten books unless you count Beano annuals. Actually I have read the Bible and the Jews did it, I thought it would be the butler but I was wrong.

You've gotta take The Beach with you...read it before i got to Thialand.... then again afterwards...i could relate so much to it afterwards! BRILLIANT...and the book is much better than the film!

A brave, brave man he was. Shame his TV work since hasn't been as funny.

I'll have to check out those on your list Charlie. Thanks for sharing.

exactly! ;)

1. Catch 22
2. Tropic of Ruislip (or any other ) - Leslie Thomas
3. The Rise & Fall of the Trigan Empire.
4. Eagle Annual 1967
5. Where did I go right - John Otway
6. Lorna Doone
7. Robinson Crusoe - useful for reference
8. Green Wing Scripts (I'll have to imagine)
9. Complete Beatles Lyrics
10. 2,000 page lined pad.

Sorry late getting around to it (!) no particular order:

1. Back to B.C. - Johnny Hart (cartoons)
2. Oxford Dictionary (for all those words I'm unsure of the meaning of!)
3. Godel, Escher & Bach - Douglas R. Hofstadter
4. Foucault's Pendulum - Umberto Eco
5. The Oxford Companion to The Mind - Richard Gregory (ed.)
6. Anything new by Patricia Cornwall or Kathy Reichs (read 'em all except one so far)
7. The Ultimate Guitar Book - Tony Bacon (drool!)
8. A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
9. The English Language - David Crystal
10. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert M. Pirsig

Hey David ... if you can arrange to be on the next-door island I wouldn't mind a squint at the '67 Eagle Annual and the Robinson Crusoe if one of us could row across!

When I've got some tips from old Robbo it should be a piece of cake.
