Quote: chipolata @ February 6 2009, 9:35 AM GMTAlcohol actually kills brain cells, so long term it probably damages the creative process.
But as this recent report suggests, if you drink just a bit, you'll live longer:
"Moderate Drinkers Who Also Exercise Likely to Live Longer, Study Finds
A long-term study of nearly 12,000 people in Denmark found a reduced risk of life-threatening ailments among those who both drank alcohol and exercised regularly"

And next week they'll be a report out saying exactly the opposite.
Quote: Griff @ February 6 2009, 10:21 AM GMTI suspect it's the "and exercised regularly" which might rule out most of BSG.
Ah you see, that's where I'm going right.

Having it large is good. Not like pear type drinks.

Hey, it's ever-so-slightly classier! You drink it out of a recycled paper bag in a Waitrose doorway rather than brown paper slumped outside Co-op...

That doesn't look like it's well cooked to me.

you allowed to go near them again now Chip?
look -
There was a great bit in the Charlie Brooker writing special the other week when Tony Jordan was talking about writing Dot Cotton's monologue... I paraphrase a bit but...
"I locked myself in the office with a bottle of bacardi a bottle of coke and 40 silk cut. The next morning my wife woke me up. My face was on the desk I looked up at the screen and saw the words 'fade-out'."
Now I didn't see the Dot Cotton monologue... but respect to the man for that.
I think Tony jordan was legend building. That is, I think he was lying.
Lots of writers are drinkers. Some thrive on it and others piss their talent up the wall. In my experience I prefer the drinkers because most comedy writers are boring when they're sober.
And finally, I think using a bit of booze to aid the creative process is far less of a crutch than frequent posting on a comedy forum.
I'm surprised at the almost American attitude to booze that has been appeared on this post.
I think a lot of writers enjoy a drink, but obviously if you can't write or only write rubbish when you've had a couple then, yes it's best to forget it.
I remember a TV doctor talking about alcohol and a novelist he knew; he was practically an alcoholic when he was working on a book - especially as he's alone, but then when it came to promoting it around the world he never touched a drop.
I don't get hangovers. But I do sometimes find that if I'm a bit drunk, the ideas can flow better but I need to rewrite when I'm sober.

I think frequent posting on a comedy forum is the opposite of a crutch to the creative process. It hinders it. Aaron probably only set up the BSG because of his deep deated hatred of writers.

If I were Mark, I'd have some issues with that comment...
