I suppose it makes sense for keeping certain people (rather than just bots) out and was well-constructed as a quiz, and maybe I'm underestimating people but think it might be a deterrent for some of your genuine customer - What if THEY're foreign?

Would be a really nice idea for a quiz site though - have to solve your mini-quiz to register.

Was being a bit unkind about the ambiguity comment of numbers and rows, in English people would start from top left through habit of reading. Though if you're essentially going to lead to a square number calculation, why not make it one most people can do in their head e.g. up to 12^2?

I doubt even 1% of Americans would know that the snowdrop was a flower. I've never heard the term anywhere but on this forum. Maybe they don't grow here?

I arrived at the correct answer of 1849, by the way.

That flower is called snowdrop all over northern North America in english. They are the first spring flower that can creep out of snow to bloom. They are found on edge of woods and all over sweet grass areas.

In my language the flower is called wa wanahca

When it blooms spring is on soon.

Snowdrops are cool.

Just saying.

3. Er just as a matter of interest how would you know whether the reCatcha site is run by Internet crooks or not. It would be an ideal cover for a system for breaking Captcha for other sites.

I'm not sure where to even start answering this. It's a reasonably well known, reputable system. If you think your site is that important and that upsing someone else's system is too dangerous, then that's a judgement for you. The front page says it's copyright Carnegie Mellon, and just a couple of clicks will confirm that for you on CM's own site.

In any case, how would any other users know that YOUR site isn't run by these pesky 'Internet crooks'? To be totally blunt, it doesn't exactly look professional.

2. That's boring I wanted to try something new.

Don't reinvent the wheel. Don't make your users think. If someone's coming to your site for help, chances are they're exasperated and tired already - hardly in the mood for all these brain teasers. It's like you're actively trying to stop anyone from signing up. I wouldn't expect that kind of thing unless I was actively looking for a site with mental quizzes and challenges, and I cannot think of anyone who would sit through it rather than head back to Google and find somewhere else.

And that's not even with my HCI hat on.

Wikipedia makes no mention of it being in North America. It would appear that any snowdrops that grow here were introduced from Europe and are not native.
