Calling Cock-en-ees Page 2

We're off on a tangent - .... -

Bollocks! Why did I pick the word tangent. I couldn't have done worse by picking orange.

I bet the Cock-en-ees never did tangents or ate oranges. Just no call for 'em - no mileage my son! Here! Somebody lendiz a monkey

Drum and Bass = Place

I was going to say that.

Drum syncopation = accommodation.

Laughing out loud

Just like to make what is anything but a pedantic point...Minder - Terry and Arthur - they're not Cockneys. NOT East Enders. The Winchester club's in Fulham, Terry's flat is in West Ken, and Arthur's used car lot (later series) is in Churchfield Road Acton.
Very, very firmly West London, places and people.

It's really annoying when people keep saying "Tel and Arfur - cockney geezers"...

All Londoners use a bit of rhyming from time to time

Yeah fair point HB

You live and learn. I had forgotten that Cockney is specifically East End. I did know that Tel & Arfur were West Londoners and also knew the locations too.

I once was coming out of London and stopped at Heston Services. In the car park there was a film crew and joy of joys they was only filming Minder. 'King 'ell mate! George Cole was doing a scene in the back of a motor.

It was later passed off as a services that was supoposed to be oop North. The magic of TV eh?

BTW. Do you know the origin of Drum?

The main reason Terry and Arthur aren't cockneys is because they are pretend.

I'm off to my drum.

I'm off to my drum.

But what does it mean me old China?

You'd bet that a service station is the one place you can get away with transposing the location, yet there's probably at least one anorak out there who's spotted a landmark or something.

I don't mean you Blenkinsop ;)

99% sure it's drum and bass - the musical genre may have come a lot later, but the expression's always been around as a band's rhythm section

Very interesting. Was it rhyming slang in the C19th, or just slang?

Drum and bass is accepted pretty widely now, so based on the article it's a recent evolution.

There's no indication that "drum" was a rhyming slang originally.

In which case we've all been barking up the wrong tree :)

It was origanally for people on social benefit and weren't very happy where they were.

*nods sagely, vaguely confused*
