We're getting our buses back this week after a 51 day strike. I can't freaking wait. Traffic has been awful, people on the streets have been pissy and I was getting tired of walking in the cold everywhere.
Snow - Friend or Foe? Page 9
Quote: billwill @ February 2 2009, 1:56 PM GMTThe buses should be the FIRST thing running once the road have nbeen salted/cleared not the last due to lousy administration. It would demonstrate a real indication that London Transport aim to support their passengers more than their staff.
Is it not still snowing where you are? It is here (and reasonably heavily). I totally support TfL deciding to keep huge 12-ton boxes off of roads which are filling up again, and covered with ice even when clear of snow.

There's no ice on my stretch of road here, private cars are travelling normally.
Looking at the London web cams it seems pretty much the same over most of London.

I am tucked up in bed and the telly doesn't work so I am guessing that is something to do with the weather.
It has snowed non stop all day - definitely the heaviest we have had for many years.
It is very pretty and watching the children playing outside is fun, but it is also worrying when family are having to travel long distances.
I can't go out. Perhaps I should get snowchains.
I guess I am 50/50 on the 'do you like snow' question.

Didn't Gary Glitter use that as his defence in court?
Mind you there are a feck of a lot of stupid private drivers out there. Many of them have not cleared the snow off the top of their car, not realising that if they have to brake that snow will slide forwards off their roof & cover their windscreen, so they will not be able to see during a critical time.
Other, even more stupid ones, have not cleared the snow off the roof AND off the rear window, so they can't see behind.

I do not mean to sound cruel but most of you would last one day in the climate I live in or learn to cope with the nature. I sadly admit I suspect the first.

Hence our desire to completely eradicate nature as quickly as possible.

This I believe.

I did once spend 6 weeks in the outskirts of Minneapolis in the winter, so I'm more familiar with snow & really cold weather than most English people.
And talking of the cold acclimatization earlier in this topic; when I went from Minneapolis to New York where it was a mere -5 centigrade I felt warm & went around without an overcoat.
Quote: Griff @ February 2 2009, 8:34 AM GMTI guess I probably am too old to enjoy waiting for hours at a freezing cold station for a series of cancelled trains that never arrive.
Quote: Paul W @ February 2 2009, 9:16 AM GMTI f**king hate this snow - I nearly skidded out as I went to work.
Quote: Lee Henman @ February 2 2009, 10:16 AM GMTWhat the Hell is wrong with weather forecasters? On the BBC weather site last night it said my town would be getting "light snow". I woke up this morning to Siberia. Three inches at least and it's coming down REALLY heavy as I type.
I'm not really complaining - I actually do like a bit of snedge but our weather forecasters are shit.
Quote: billwill @ February 2 2009, 1:00 PM GMTOh what a useless transport system we have here in London, UK.
Three to nine inches of snow and almost all of the buses are withdrawn, just when you most need them (have they not heard of snow chains) and most of the Underground has delays and problems..
Yet 'we' keep getting encouraged to use public transport !!!
Quote: Aaron @ February 2 2009, 1:19 PM GMTI really can't believe people complaining about public transport (particularly in London). I keep hearing on the news and whatnot that it's not snowed like this in 18 years. So what the f**k do you want, a couple of days IN 18 YEARS where things are a bit f**ked up, or do you want the overpriced fares to go towards things which will only be used for a couple of days IN 18 YEARS?
Grow the f**k up. Get some perspective.
It is a bit pathetic. One trip to Poland it was minus 35 on my last day and the snot freezes in your nose. And it was in the days when I could only afford a 30-hour train ride back to London - the joy of getting off at Hoek v Holland and it was "only" -6C, so warm.
Minneapolis is indeed notorious - all the shopping centres are attached by walkways so you don't have to go out into the cold. Their winter festival should be on at the moment, deep fried Twinkies and everything.
Deep fried twinkies.
Ahhh the snow's amazing! It meant I could practice photography, and everything looked pretty no matter how rubbish my pictures were.
Teehee.
