British Comedy Guide

What is there to do in Camden Town at night?

BSGers, assistance please.

I need to amuse myself for around 5hrs between 6pm - 11pm next Tuesday.

I'm dropping some teenagers to a gig at the Underworld, Camden High St. Whilst they're at the gig, I need to park up (locally & cheaply), eat & relax.

A nearby comedy venue with free parking is unlikely I suppose. I would certainly welcome your recommendations.

Thanks in anticipation.

Congestion charge ends at 7pm, I think. Could head into town, find a car park, then stroll around, find somewhere to eat, go to the cinema...? :/

Nearby comedy clubs include:

Dingwalls has a Jongleurs. Might be a comedy gig on there. Up by the lock.

Etcectera Theatre above the Oxford (something or other) pub. Small theatre - usually some sort of show there.

Or up the Road in Kentish Town is the Lion and Unicorn where a poster on this board (Sammy) has, I think, got a sketch show on - Sunken Treasure.

Give me a yell if you wanna know more. I'm sure there's other comedy venues. The newly refurbished roundhouse is near there too. You should check out what's on.

Me n the missus are off to London in March, after booking a hotel room for £29! We just missed out on the £1 offers.

Things to do in Camden

1 Buy some skunk outside the tube.
2 Get mugged.
3 Mug some one.
4 Get drunk and shout at things.
5 Visit the shop where Madness bought their Dr Martins.
6 There's a very nice comic shop there.

I once went to the World's End and spent the whole evening avoiding some one who wanted a fight. Maybe I should have given hin one.

Do some Amy Winehouse/Pete Doherty spotting?

The World's End is rough as f**k. I was there one New Year's Eve and when the bouncers decided it was time for people to leave they just picked up stragglers and literally kicked them out. Eventually the police were called due to a massive ruck between pissed-off drinkers and bouncers. I was however amused to see one bloke yell "I'll have you know I write for the Daily Telegraph" before getting an extra shoeing on his way down.

The Camden Tup is a nice pub though. And the Dublin Castle is fun.

Well they're in shit that was probably Bozzerj, bet he'll build a runway over the shit hole.

(Not just jizz although obviously jizz is marvellous.)

Yes, we're all familiar with your preferences by now, Griff. Although I think jizz might well be preferable to jazz.

Laughing out loud!

Many thanks to all who've responded to date, including sootyj.

I'm now more concerned about the parking than anything else. Last time I was in London for a show, it cost £36.00 in a multi-storey near Drury Lane for just over 4 hours.

(Sadly, train/tube is not an option.)

Do you have a laptop? If so, my advice is to find a McDonald's with a car park, head inside, and leech from their free WiFi for a few hours, munching your way through a burger or two.

Or else, tell the kids to get there on their own.

Here's an extract from "A rough guide to..."

"Shagging in alleys, bus stops, backs of cars. Stabbing and being stabbed. Sitting in casualty 'til the early hours. And those that live even closer to the edge than that, won't go wrong with ending the night on a kebab."

That is certainly an option!

Parking in Camden Town can be difficult. Car parks are pretty much non-existent except for the big one under Sainsburys, which you enter from Kentish Town Road opposit Hawley Road http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Camden+High+St,+Camden,+London+NW1,+United+Kingdom&sll=51.604515,-0.148462&sspn=0.008369,0.013561&g=London,+Middlesex,+N10+1BD&ie=UTF8&lr=lang_en&cd=1&geocode=FdtoEgMddtX9_w&split=0&ll=51.539242,-0.141374&spn=0.004191,0.006781&z=17

You need to go into Sainsburys & buy a few items to get your ticket validated.

Five hours is a bit long to rely on them for that, so parking meters on the south-going roads away from the bustle are possibly best: Bayham St or Camden St.

Camden Lock Market doesn't completely shut until about 7pm so you could walk up to there and spend your first few hours wandering around that fascinating place. Cheap meals from the stalls at that time of day as the stall holders try to sell off the last of their cooked food at lower & lowerr prices. The pub at Camden Lock is OK too and not as 'rough' as World's End. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Camden+High+St,+Camden,+London+NW1,+United+Kingdom&sll=51.604515,-0.148462&sspn=0.008369,0.013561&g=London,+Middlesex,+N10+1BD&ie=UTF8&lr=lang_en&cd=1&geocode=FdtoEgMddtX9_w&split=0&ll=51.541364,-0.144775&spn=0.004191,0.006781&z=17

There is a great kebab house called (I think) the Wooden Grill in Camden Road on the north side about 80 yards east of The World's End. I often used to eat there (upstairs) as they cook to perfection.
