So you're saying we SHOULD be violent? There's nothing wrong with feeling, but I'd like to think that we could think violent things but not act on them. Being violent is irresponsible. Yes we're a violent species, but that doesn't mean we should just give in to that. I hope we never meet in a dark alley Sooty, I fear for my safety!

You sound like George from Seinfeld.

"We're meant to be living in a civilized society!"

Matt is getting frustrated!

Bussell you may have given me the alibi I was looking for in my new career as a murderer/rapist/burglar.

New career?

Providing he doesn't look like him too, he's all right.

You sort of look like Kramer. Well, you're tall with big hair.

Well, I'm shortish. Not George short though.

It's how we manage it. Training and equipping our selves to protect our selves is natural and responsible.

Switzerland is the model of a responsible culture where responsibility for preventing violence through civil defence works.

I'm beginning to wander if being wrong is some weird fetish of yours.

New career?

Credit crunch, making money out of my hobby.

When my hair's a bit shorter I get accused of looking like Jerry.

Quote: sootyj @ January 28 2009, 2:57 PM GMT

We're a violent species pretending we're not is anthropologically irresponsible.

Whilst that may be true, we are all part of civilisation are we not? - And civilisation, some might say, can be defined as always advancing to greater heights of excellence and achievement in human behaviour/interaction. Wanton violence belongs to the barbaric ages.

Civilisation? As defined on this occasion by Wordnet:
To raise from a barbaric to a civilized state.

Jerry looks weird nowadays, if the DVD extras on Seinfeld are anything to go by.

All the pieces are falling into place.

He looks pudgy. Maybe like he's melting a little. And he seems to talk and react very slowly.

Exactly! I feel quite uncomfortable watching him.

Quite, but note wanton-violence. My view would be to create a society that controlled the means of violence until we evolved beyond them.

My view would be the best weapon is the one that was never used, but didn't neccasairly not exist.

The Swedish defence forces shrank recently and most members of the reserves returned their guns and ammunitions. 1000s of rifles never fired, boxes of bullets never opened. But needed when there was a real fear of the Russian bear on the doorstep.

Ultimately the best solution to civil violence, is education and erradication of poverty. But we're not there yet and pretending we are helps no one.
