I never understand the 'soapy' thing. Is really showing a companion's family soap-like, or every other drama ever made-like?! 
Let's have the Dr and assistant as friends, rather than inject any romcom into it. Why turn it into every other show on TV?

I would say putting the assistant's family into it, plus putting a romantic element into it is going down the soap route.

No matter who they put in as the new doctor they can't be as bad as the last.
