Dog tortured to death during Kalamazoo break-in

Associated Press
3:30 PM CST, January 16, 2009

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A dog died after someone who broke into a Kalamazoo home drenched the helpless animal in household cleaners.

Police say only a few dollars' worth of coins were taken during the burglary.

Pet owner Nancy Sheppard was at work Tuesday when someone entered her home and poured the toxic liquids onto her small, dark-haired dachshund mix named Lucky.

The animal was in a crate and unable to avoid the attack. He was rushed to a local animal hospital but later died.

A neighbor noticed Sheppard's front door open and called the police. Officers found the home ransacked with empty bottles of household cleaner strewn about and the dog "dripping wet and foamy."

Cleaning fluids filled Lucky's food and water dishes and crate.

Police are investigating.

Home invasions like the one in Wales are very rare around these parts, mainly because burglars know the homeowners might be armed. In my city alone, residents have shot 3 burglars in the first 2 weeks of the year.

Why the hell would you keep a dog in a crate anyway?

That is pretty bad, but to snap the poor thing's neck in front of its extremely aged, otherwise (it sounds) pretty lonely owner, is far sicker, IMO.

I guess I meant to say that the dog suffered more than the bird. But the bird's owner was probably more traumatized than the dog's owner.

Even the Humane Society advocates crate training for dogs:

I know dogs that would spend all day in their crate/cage if they were allowed to. I think it's due to their natural instinct to live in dens and such.

Perhaps... Depends what happened exactly TO the dog. Was it actually really ill? Did they put it down preventatively?

Either way, pretty nasty thing to do.

Weird. Not that I'm a fan of dogs mind, or cats for that matter.

If someone hurt my cat, I'd be quite tempted to kill them. :/

Probably wouldn't, but still. Tempted.

We could team up.

The feline revengers.

News reports say it died of chemical poisoning. Household cleansers are quite toxic.
