Trust me, it's a desert and practically uninhabitable most of the year. The rocks have all washed down from the nearby Marble Mountains during flash floods.

Here's a photo of the mountains, my buddy (.357 Magnum in his lap) and the general surroundings of our campsite.

I must admit that looks like an ace place to go camping.
But what if your mate suddenly went psycho?

Having been to the area myself, yes Ian, it is DEFINITELY desert. Just not the traditional image of mountains of sand.

Have you really? A holiday of some sort?

Yeah, or went sleep shooting?

Those mountains look goooorgeous.

I wanna go there. :(
Only, not if I'm going to get accidentally shot up the bum by two blokes shooting at beer bottles.
;)

Don't worry zooo, I'll be giving your bum a great amount of protection.

He's 90% psycho already, but I trust him not to shoot me as long as I'm not trying to steal his last bottle of bourbon.

We were in the Army together (he was actually my instructor for a course called 'Principles of Satellite Communications' in 1986) so we're both trained to use firearms safely.

Yes, holiday and roadtrip across the west.

Ha! I think I can see him in that picture with one eye on his beer :)

Wow. How old were you?

I could never venture that far cos I won't fly :(

You're lucky if you see another person the entire weekend. Most are just looking for fossils and are unarmed - it is California, after all - so you'll be safe as long as we aren't in the area.

FYI, it's completely legal to shoot in that area. It's government land and we checked before we started packing the heavy artillery.

I'm only messing. I'm sure you know what you're doing. :)

(Guns are always scary though, especially to us non gun familiar Brits.)

I haaaaaaate it. But will force myself to endure if there's a cool holiday at the other end.

Do you have a proper actual phobia then?

There's Jim Beam and Coke in his cup. The beer (Samuel Adams) in the other chair is mine. He likes to go for the high-octane beverages first.

You should try to overcome your adversity to flying. There are a lot of great places to see on this planet. I was scared when I was a kid - I'm absolutely petrified of heights - but I just forced myself to get on a plane and now I fly almost 50,000 miles per year.

I do! I've never ever flown. Sometimes on the bus back to my home town we go through the airport and I see the planes and think f**k that!
It's more a fear of crashing than a fear of actually flying though, but I suppose they amount to the same thing?

18.

And that's really your own fault, isn't it? :P

I've heard that the best customers at places like these are Brits and the Japanese.
