Speccy or Commodore? Page 2

Yeah I remember that prize - Wasn't there a similar thing for Elite as well?

I had been known to use the infinite lives cheat, but there was a part of the game where you walked into a room and immedieatly feel from a great height and died, then when you came back you fell off again straight away. So you ended up in an infinite loop and had to turn it off.

A "poke" for fall from any height would have been handy!

Excellent link - Though my employers will probably disagree!!!

I think there was a similar prize for Elite, yeah. I have that game and a BBC model B as part of my collection.

And yep, the fall to your death loop in JSW was hilarious... and really annoying.

Peek & Poke... hah! What memories!

There is a sound/music option for that Java version of the game (a link lower down the page)... but it's way too distracting!

i get confused between my vic 20 and commodore 64. i was always jealous of my spectrum owning friends because it seemed to have better games.
i enjoyed the text adventures - voodoo castle, the count (couldn't finish that one), the hobbit. anyone know where i can download them?
arcadia was a good "shoot them up".

I'm not an internet guru, but I'm sure someone here could point you in the right direction for downloads.

When I had my acorn I was jealous of spectrum owners. Everyone who had one walked with a strut..... maybe not.

Have you got a Spectrum plus 3 Darren?

No, I don't... I didn't really like the Amstrad versions of the Speccy. Amstrad took over that part of Sinclair in 1986, I think... and while they improved some things, including the reliability over models such as the Spectrum +, they just didn't really 'do' it for me.

My brother had a Spectrum +2 which, as you pointed out earlier, eliminated the problem of external tape recorder settings... so that was handy.

I had kind of moved on to the Atari range by then. Despite owning gad knows how many computers in my time, I'll always have a soft spot for the Speccy...

I never really liked the + 3 either, I don't know why. someone I knew had one, and the games loaded in seconds with the disc drive.

Ever heard of the Sam Coupe?

I hadn't... but I just Googled it. What a weird thing! I can see what they were trying to do but I guess it was a bit too late for that kind of machine... things had moved on quite a bit by then.

There's a great resource for old computers here:

The 'Museum' section lists all the clones too...

I had an Acorn Electron. I programmed a bit on it but I was only about 10 so I was too busying BMX'ing! And playing with Stomper trucks and Pea shooters. The best game was Positron. Worst game was "Escape from moonbase Alpha"!!! With the Frankensteins and witches on the moon.

I had a C64 after. Then I had an Amiga, the big daddy. I had an AMOS game I wrote featured in Amiga Format :) Reader's games section.

My friend was into the whole Amiga thing... while I preferred Atari at the time. His choice certainly turned out to be the better one!

The Amiga has a really decent OS... and an early version of Lightwave ran on it... they used Lightwave to create the 3D graphics for shows such as Babylon 5.

Do you still have a copy of the game you wrote Shoe?

ZX Spectrum, all day every day. I recently bought a 48k rubber-key model off eBay for pure nostalgia. I haven't even plugged the thing in.

I think I broke my original one through hammering the keys playing Daley Thomsons Decathlon. I think I burst a good few joysticks with that game too.

I'm old enough to recall buying 'Spectrum User' or something like, and forcing my Dad into reading out the BASIC code for me to type in - I wish I could say the games were worth the effort. Publishing standards were not what they are now, so typos, gnashing of teeth and early bedtimes were pretty standard.

No I don't have the game anymore sadly :( But it was a tetris style puzzle game which I'd like to re-write in Flash some day.

I never got to play an Atari ST. Although a friend of mine from Uni wrote an ST Emulator so I could always old school it tonight!

My other friend is an Amiga nut, he brought an A1200 last year and pimped it out with a PCMCIA Flash Disk. It's quite odd seeing a 90's Amiga boot up in seconds from modern PC technology.

My mate had an Amiga.

I had a girlfriend.
