"Don't break my heart, my achy-breaky heart."

...I'm sorry...

I'm not a fan... but it's partly to do with the whole 'style over substance' thing that's currently so popular in just about every facet of the entertainment field. Not that I like the trad stuff much either... but some of the old Willie Nelson/Johnny Cash tracks are heartfelt and undeniably moving.

My brother lives in San Antonio in Texas... working there as a keyboard player, and he gets to play with a lot of bands (no-one famous or anything) that favour a more traditional approach. He says this is still very popular but, as you might expect, appeals more to an older audience. If I had to choose, I’d go for the older material but it still leaves me feeling a little cold. Could that be down to C&W being American 'folk', which is harder for us Brits to relate to, I wonder?

Like a lot of threads on this forum, it boils down to personal taste.

That's cool about your brother. I prefer the traditional stuff too, but the modern traditonal stuff.

My Uncle is a country singer, well he sings country in some Spanish/English holiday resort - you know the sort.

My Grand(pa) ^^ his Dad was a "real" American man (hick) and was a country singer, yeehaw!! And so on...

Great! It must be really something to do it full-time, I know I'd like to.

Um - isn't that a contradiction?

Well I don't. But anyway, that's beside the point. YOU ADMIT TO THIS?! :|

Actually, it isn't. Country today is not just Shania Twain (who is, btw, semi-retired). In fact, she is the only artist I can think of who has included pop in her repotiore. Modern traditonal country is brilliant and a thousand times better than Johnny Cash, in my opinion. And despite popular assumption, Traditonal Country is still going strong and is better than ever before. Practically every artist in Country music is traditonal and includes great artists like 33 year old multi-award winning Brad Paisley (who is already, virtually a living legend), Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert, Gretchen Wilson, Chely Wright, Martina Mcbride, Jason Aldean, Mark Wills - and also Randy Travis and Vince Gill. Every one of them and many more are Traditonal Country artists today. Hence, modern traditional.

So, in short, that wasn't a contradiction.

Laughing out loud

My mates man played me some good ol c**try moosic. This geezer was singing about a tree. A TREE.
Warbling on about its branches and how they filled him up with warmth.
I think he was shagging that TREE. TREEDOPHILE.

Don't knock trees Charley lad. Without them this country wouldn't have oxygen and where would we be then eh ?. It would be like Lanzarote for feck sake.

I like trees. Especialy those really droopy ones. You can get up to all sorts under them. I dont love them enough to burst into song about them though.

They also make fantastic paper for my printer.

No...Shame. There have been so many great songs written about trees as well.

1] Tree coins in a fountain { Frank Sinatra ]
2] Tree Lions [ The Lightning Seeds ]
3] Treeler [Michael Jackson]

To name but tree.
