Best Sitcom Series of 2008? Page 3

You're kidding right? I particularly enjoyed a number of sitcoms this year. In no particular order, they included: Peep Show, Lead Balloon, The Inbetweeners, Cabin Pressure, Ed Reardon's Week, Pulling, Hut 33, Double Science, Bleak Expectations, How Not To Live Your Life, All Bar Luke, Outnumbered and Count Arthur Strong.

Yes, admittedly 2008 also brought us Clone, Coming Of Age and Lab Rats... but every year has duds.

Anyway, as Aaron mentioned above, The BCG Awards 2008 will be along shortly (this weekend) to help us come up with a definitive picture of what was hot and what was not in 2008.

For those that haven't taken part in our awards before, we basically dish up a list of every comedy that has been broadcast in the year, and you get to choose your favourite/most hated in each genre. Last year Gavin and Stacey and Peep Show came out top, and Vivienne Vyle and Hyperdrive came out the other end.

Sorry Mark, I'm not kidding. I haven't seen some of the shows you mentioned, but the ones I know were mostly second and third series' and didn't build inspirationally on what had gone before - I suppose I mean Lead Balloon, Pulling, and Peeop Show here... As for Dan Clarks's How Not To Live Your Life - that was toilet in my view. I saw two episodes of The Inbetweeners and it was well made but you can't expect me to watch a show about teenagers.

It got a bit of a kicking. I think the problem was people's expectations for it were very high, what with their stage tour having gone down so well with audiences. The episode was never going to be able to live up to people's expectations when it arrived.

I'm really not sure how many people knew of them previously, let alone had an idea of how good their tour may have been.

I'd never heard of them myself, so came into it with a totally open mind. And it was totally shit.

I'd go along with that.

Why wouldn't you watch a show about teenagers, Godot? Would you also rule out watching One Foot In The Grave because it's about pensioners, or Smack The Pony because it's about women?

I would watch a show about teenagers made by people my age, taking the piss out of them.

Your post is disingenuous in any case so don't this as a response.

The Inbetweeners was written by some blokes in their thirties, wasn't it? How old exactly are you, Godot?

Surprised Freezing has not been mentioned here, cos it was brill and, from what I recall, got good reviews here. Probably my favourite of the year. The agent probably should get 'best comedy performance' too.

Lead Balloon was great because I remember feeling 'all I want to do is write comedy' after watching it every week, so must have been good.

I'm surprised Dan Clark's How Not to Live Your Life was 'returning' and not 'new' in Awards categories. Have I missed something or was it broadcast over the New Year last year and hence 'returning'???

Dan

Yes, I totally forgot about Freezing. It was superb.

Not sure who or what I'll be voting for exactly.

And in answer, IIRC How Not To Live Your Life was from a 2007 pilot. But then so was Freezing.

Ah, I never saw the pilot so that explains it.

Yeah, Freezing was from the BBC Four Tight Spot season.

Dan

No, I never saw the pilot either.

Having checked...

https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/how_not_to_live_your_life/

The pilot was broadcast on 27th September 2007.

I wouldn't joke about such matters.

It was different. I laughed. Those other Comedy Labs were awful though.

What, even School of Comedy?!?

?!?!?

Probably, My Family, although I did enjoy "Lead Balloon".

?!?!?

Especially.

Especially.

Wasn't asking you, you big . . . Stink face.

I only really watched The IT Crowd & Peep Show so I can't really say anything about anything other than those two. I would like to however thank this thread for giving me recommendations on what to check out next! :)

Outnumbered, though Peep Show, Gavin & Stacey and Lead Balloon were also good.

The Inbetweeners was probably the best original sitcom.
