The Office: An American Workplace Page 2

I really - with only a few exceptions - am not interested in american comedy. I don't find it relevant and it doesn't make me laugh.

I used to like MASH before I watched the repeats with the laughter track - and over recent years only really liked Cheers, South Park and American Dad. Oh yes - I liked Naked Gun films and consequently Police Squad. Apart from that? Well ............

Okay that's fair enough, I won't get into another US comedy debate in another thread. :D

But at least you say they don't make 'you' laugh, that's opinion and that's fine. But the guy in the other thread is basically just saying its shit and trashing all US comedy in a very small minded way.

David, I agree that MOST American TV is complete rubbish. However, we definitely had the greatest sitcom to ever air on television.

Watch Arrested Development and tell me it's not the most original, hilarious, smart, witty show ever made.

Plus we also have "My Name is Earl", "Scrubs", "30 Rock", "Family Guy", "The Simpsons", "American Dad", "South Park", "Andy Barker P.I (may it rest in peace)", plus many new shows coming out this fall that look very promising.

The generalization that all American TV is rubbish is rubbish itself. Sure, the majority is CRAP, but we are getting better.

^ So true, over here it seems to be the other way round, we use to be so damn good at comedy but now we seem to be getting worse.

I don't want to be controversial but I didn't like Arrested Development. I didn't find it original or funny and as for being the best sitcom ever I have to put at least ten others above it

No worries. Arrested Development wasn't for everyone.

In fact, some say it was far too original and smart for most of the world to get it.

Sounds like an excuse to it ending after only 3 seasons.

But it's a true and good excuse.

I'm finding now that the more I'm trying to write and then reading this site I'm having to become more and more selective about my viewing. I just don't have the time to watch everything so I generally go with what I know and with comedy - if I do watch and it doesn't make me laugh in the first few minutes I give up!

I also think Arrested Development is one of the best sitcoms ever as I've stated on here many times, but I just can't get over how good it is. So many jokes crammed into one episode, brilliantly weaved together plots and just the greatest set of characters played by the best cast you could imagine. It's easily my favourite modern comedy, it's given me the most belly laughs, the most "Wow how did they come up with that" laughs and just the most overall entertainment.

From cleverly written jokes like the one where Michael has the giant pair of scissors and he's fighting with Gob who has the giant plastic rock and the narrator says something like "It proved once and for all the rock beats scissors...but the the Paper covered them both"..and it shows a shot of a Newspaper reporting the incident.

To then just silly jokes like Sitwell and his fake eyebrows, "You look surprised!"...and then he goes "Oh?" and adjusts his eyebrows.

I will never forgive Fox for cancelling it.

Agreed.

And the shame is, FOX treated Arrested Development so poorly that the writers and creator said that even if FOX wanted to resurect the show, they wouldn't do it.

I feel like if Arrested Development came out 3 years later, it would have done great!! Because with shows like Scrubs, The Office, My Name is Earl, and 30 Rock out, the American comedy audience wants to see that kind of show!! Too bad. It was too far ahead of it's time.

Yeah wasn't there talk of Showtime and HBO wanting to buy it at one point but Mitch Hurwitz turned them down?

Also there's talk of a movie right?

I've been watching AD today :)

"Ah but where did the lighter fluid come from?"

Yes! That's true, but again, Mitch Hurwitz was so beaten and bruised from FOX, he just wanted it over.

There were rumors of a movie, but I don't know. It seems like the cast has moved on to bigger and better things.

However, I found out today that I'm going to a preview screening of a new movie due next year staring Michael Cera (George-Michael) and it says he will be there. So perhaps I'll get to meet him! How exciting.

I watched one episode and it spoiled the British version of The Office for me. I haven't watched it since.

There not much point me adding anything to David’s post because I think he’s said it all, it’s as if we could even be the same person, ;) which is a worry. Perhaps just add the Simpsons.

Oh that sounds cool, Michael Cera is great as George Michael, even the little improvised bits he adds are hilarious. I saw an episode of his new show on YouTube a month or so back, not sure if it's an internet only show but I wasn't that impressed with, it was going down the road of that "I'm a smug actor" joke, which has been done too much recently.
