Writing+ Ops

There are five or six new writing ops for different things on Writers' Room. Some look like they involve directing/producing too: http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/opportunity/index.shtml

Thought I'd put them in one thread rather than starting umpteen separate ones. Deadlines seem to be between end of December and end of January.

Dan

Nice one. :)

That's lucky, I've just finished a ten-minute play about the history of Alabama!
Oh, actually, on second-reading , it's about a hairdressers.

Shame.

Thanks for the heads up, Dan. :)

A quick rewrite of a hypothetical script with, say, some tips you might just have hypothetically received, might hypothetically go down well...

;)

Dan

Thanks.

Good stuff. I entered a script into last year's Sharps and while it didn't make it they gave me some useful feedback.

What is all this "Must not be in full-time education" bollocks that they've started adding to their specifications?!

It's to stop teachers and lecturers in Media Studies applying.

why?

Because those that can't, teach? ;)

why?

Because Tony Jordan doesn't want them learning his secrets.

are those two above serious answers?

My two answers weren't, they were both, in their own small way, jokes.

:)

Hopefully in the new year you'll continue this trend of explaining your jokes. It'll save us all a lot of time and effort. :)

Certainly. Well the first gag was based arund the old reversal of expectation procedure. The questioner asked why those in full time education were barred from entering the competion. Clearly referring to students. I usurped that expectation by taking it to mean teachers and lecturers. But not just any educationers, specifically those teaching Media Studies. Thus layering the gag with another subtle point. I.e the BBC wouldn't be looking for those people to apply as they really wanted people who were actually capable of DOING rather than just talking about it.

The second gag was more character based. Tony Jordon is often quoted on the homepage of the Writersroom as saying 'I write because I have secrets no one else knows.' The gag here being that if Media lecturers were allowed into the BBC they would steal these secrets and teach them on their courses.

Hope that helps.

:D
