British Comedy Guide

A tip from each of us.

I only found this forum in November and it has been invaluable.

So, in the spirit of giving (but not too much), how about a nice tip from every contributer - as succinct as possible.

To start:

For sketches - SHORTEN!! If submitting to radio, non-comm writers tend not to dominate. If you've got a one pager where every line is a gag, that sounds ideal.

Whistling nnocently

Don't worry about asking anyone anything.

Don't eat the yellow snow.

But more importantly; write as much as possible, in all different formats, working out those writing muscles.

Yeah, but you have put it better than me.

2. Put things better than Leevil.

If something you write is poo-pooed by a particular person place or thing it doesn't mean that it is bad. If you believe in it send it to other persons, places or things and they may well have a different opinion.

However if it's poo-pooed by all then you may just have a problem.

But hey! What do those schmucks know anyhows? You're great ain'tcha? Who'll have the last laugh! :)

Respect the format, no producer is sitting around waiting for you to tell them where they went wrong.

Write for yourself.

Write for yourself.

Especially if you're the BBC head of comedy.

Do none of you know folks at the BBC?

Folks? Nah, never heard of him. But BBC NI has 'Folks On The Hill.'

He writes those crappy novels about world war 1 and that dreary James Bond sequel.

:D

Watch a lot of comedy on TV. Good and bad. You'll probably learn more from the shite comedy than the good.
