British Comedy Guide

Why am I so retarded?

Hi my names Adam and I am a retard. For years I thought when people posted on my myspace comments 'Thanks for the add' I assumed it meant thankyou for allowing me to advertise on your comments page. Now i've just realised that it means thanks for adding me to you myspace friends. Duh Adam it has two ds!

Has anyone else done or thought something and had it suddenly dawn on them that its really really stupid?

Yeah - I started posting on the British Sitcom Guide web site.

I don't think you're retarded Adam... well, not a lot... ;)

My sister's friend used to think that the words 'chortle, chortle', used in comics and Enid Blyton tales to indicate laughter/chuckling, actually read as 'charlotte, charlotte'. The even weirder thing was that she 'got' the context, so understood that any character uttering this phrase was, indeed, laughing... but in her mind, it translated as a girl's name.

It’s probably something to do with the way we recognise words from the word shape (called a ‘Bouma’ shape - although there are other models) and once we've perceived a word incorrectly, it takes extra effort or external stimuli to recognise it for what it actually is.

i used to see the word "yacht" and think it was pronounced "yatchit" or something. i had no idea what this thing was although i knew it was different from a "yot" which was a apparently a type of boat that i heard people talk about.

Nope.

And by that, I mean it hasn't dawned on me. ;)

I know I have. For ages I thought when people posted on my myspace comments 'Thanks for the add' I assumed it meant thankyou for allowing me to advertise myself on your comments page. It was only upon browsing a forum on a website devoted to british comedy, that I noticed someone had commented on the fact that it actually means thanks for adding me to your myspace friends, therefore making me realise the misconception I had harboured all this time.

I never get myspace comments so I don't understand what you people are talking about

MySpace is pure evil, so I wouldn't worry.

AJP

No-way Aaron, where else would you get to actually communicate with your comic heroes?

Liam, thank God i'm not the only one :)

I used to think "TO LET" signs were Toilets but i'm just a thick twa* anyway.

I had that same problem with the WI, they enjoyed my chocolate brownies though won best in show.
