British Comedy Guide

Comic books

There are quite a few comics fans on here, so I'm wondering, what are you reading and enjoying at the moment?

I'm only an occasional reader these days, but am planning to read some of the Marvel Essentials paperbacks over Christmas, Fantastic Four vol. 1, and The Avengers vol. 1. I feel like enjoying a few Stan Lee & Jack Kirby classics over Christmas.

The UK Marvel comics are going to be reprinting the Civil War in the new year, which I haven't read yet, so that's something to look forward to.

Last thing I read was Y and Ultimates, comics are expensive and short so I'm choosy.

Ultimates 4 and Civil War were a bit dreadful, infuriatingly episode one of the Civil was was ace.

The Ultimates was about the last decent superhero comic I read, albeit I did like Number 10.

I've just been into Bristol (Forbidden Planet) and bought two Batman graphic novels. :)

Dark Victory & The Long Halloween. Both by Jeth Loeb & Tim Sale.

I stil haven't touched these. :$

Putters, you fool.

Read The Long Hallowe'en RIGHT NOW!

Killing Joke was great everything else is a bit second rate.

Good old Alan Moore writing one novel that renders everything else irrelevant.

Soz, been a bit busy.

I'm more of a Marvel fan, but I've read a few of the DC classics, including Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns etc. I'm a bit of a Kirby fan, and enjoy his fourth world stuff, and the later Omac, Kamandi etc.

Alan Moore's Swamp Thing was, of course, superb. I think I've still got them, so must dig them out for a re-read at some point.

The Dark Knight Returns is superior to The Killing Joke, in my opinion. Though that's great too.

Dark Knight looks ugly and it's the usual Batman toss with some right wing politics sprinkled on it.

I haven't got Dark Knight 2 yet, but I remember flicking through it in a shop and thinking that the art didn't seem to have much care taken over it. Was it all Miller, or did he have help with it?

Nah, really, quite wrong; it's brilliant and Nolan should adapt it, with Mickey Rourke as Batman, to close off his trillogy.

I gave up on issue 1, it was just well poor.

But don't listen to me, one of my fave TV shows was the JLA cartoon on Cartoon Netw.

I read and reread it, it was a poor attempt to cash in on Watchmen (which is a work of genius).

It's good in that it's better than most Batman, which is better than most comics.

And the punch up with Supes if fun, but compared to the Killing Joke?

I find I prefer V for Vendetta to Watchmen these days. Watchmen has a lot of build up, with some filler (the Tales of the Black Freighter stuff) and a plot device from an episode of the Outer Limits.

Interesting I prefer V as well, but I loved the Black Freighter.

It's such a clever intricate joke.

That said as I always bore on I really love Miracle Man.
