4LAUGHS IS CLOSING Page 2

Yeah thanks for all your support guys, at least that's something 4Laughs did do!

It is with utter bitterness, of never winning anything, I say "good riddance". But then I remember the Junk Males formed there and it just makes me plain hate filled that it didn't... close down quicker!

;) :P

Jealousy will get you nowhere.

Junkette

And let us not forget that 4laughs brought us the talent and friendship of Yielding - R.I.P.

Why did it close? Just another victim of the recession?

Think Channel 4 are having a lot of trouble financially (this was reported before all the financial shit hit the fan) and I think this (and probably Comedy Lab, tbh) is a victim.

Obviously that hasn't seem to stop CEO Andy Duncan getting some 500k 'loyalty' bonus. I believe it makes him one of, if not the, top paid CEOs for the last year: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/apr/23/channel4.television

For what it's worth, I agree with Matt Stott -- started well and was a great and encouraging place with regular comps and opportunities. Then Channel 4 seemed to lose interest completely in it and it never really stood a chance. It's a big shame but I didn't really visit that often in the last few months.

Dan

Howdy guys,

Thank you so much for all your kind thoughtful words.

I've had so much fun working on 4Laughs that now it's over I feel a little lost.

I want to thank you to everyone who has every ventured on to 4Laughs and a bigger thank you to everyone who has had a go at any of the competitions that we ran. From the smallest Caption Comp to the mighty Secret Policeman's Ball - I hope you feel that 4Laughs has supported you along the way and encouraged to carry on your journey into creating comedy.

Ch4 is going to focus more on programme support across the board - this is why 4Laughs has to go.

Take care and good luck to everyone from the site,

Fay

Are you Sam Beckett? Are you going to "leap" now?

It's a shame 4Laughs is going. A somewhat short-sighted decision by Channel 4, but as is said above, I guess they're now having to save money wherever they can (I'm disappointed C4's digital radio plans, which were going to result in a competitor to Radio 4's comedy output, have been axed too. Competition is good)

Obviously this site can't match some of the opportunities provided by Channel 4, however long-term I do hope it can provide more opportunities like 4Laughs did. We have one such opportunity which will be announced in the next fortnight.

Anyway, RIP 4Laughs.

Competition is good.

I think Jake Howe said something similar just before setting up his forum to rival the BSG.

Shame. Although always felt the 4laughs boat really needed some more channel 4 wind to realy sail. Some great opportunities though. Even managed to sneak a few wins myself. Anyway good luck Fay!

Sad to see it go, I really enjoyed the days when there were multi-format competitions, video/captions/scripts, etc and more recently the WOO comps.

Met some great online buddies through there too (most of which are on here).

Thanks Fay, Chris Davina and all of you lot!

UHT MILK.

We let too many in last time. I'm with Griff - let them join the ministry of sound forum.

Let in too many? What you mean is that us ex-4laughers deigned to upgrade the quality of this site by posting here! Get it right! ;)

Nobody wants to win a weekend in Aaron's basement watching On The Buses.

It'd be a whole lot less boring a weekend if I actually had it.

I think 4laughs started well and with great intentions. Also Fay at the latter end did well to pump it back up, but the people at C4 who decide these things did not see it through for whatever reasons.

I made a few good pals there and contacts so I remember it with affection.

Could next year's Comedy Lab really be affected by Channel 4's financial problems? If so, it's just as well I didn't enter.

Laughing out loud

I know many BSG-ers will be thinking "4 What?" but that site has been key to quite a few BSG-ers and possibly many more future BSG-ers as they migrate. So let's be gentle with the new blood, peeps. We were all newbies once.
;)

The Slaggs will always have a special place for 4Laughs. The people we met, some amazing friends. Inspiration, deadlines, comedy ladder, watching other people's strides in output and trying to match them in technique etc. Brilliant.

It is a sad day but as has been mentioned C4 really needed to be in there offering the carrot more.

But no matter what happens, 4Laughs gave me: Loops, Rubes, Junk Males (including Danny and the inimitably grouchy porcupine that is Frankie) UHT and that will be it's enduring gift.

Thanks Fay Davina Chris and others. The Slaggs never forget their debts.

Cheesy ... I don't give a toss. I speak as I find and it's sincere if crude.
