Well, I guess it originates in historical dynasties, family lines, aristocratic families, stuff like that. Carrying on the distinctive name, family traditions, land and so on. And although much of that isn't really applicable anymore (sadly), or at least not to the likes of us (even more sadly), it's just ... I dunno, 'nice'. If I wasn't so tired I could probably think of some subconscious-desire explanation which makes sense. Perhaps something to do with masculinity and provision and that. I can't really explain it.

I think it has to do with death and the finality of life. It's the same reason we have cemeteries and build monuments and name streets after other people - so their names live on after they've passed. It's rather depressing to think that you could die and be completely forgotten forever.

I've done some DNA testing for genealogical purposes. Portions of the male-only Y chromosome mutate very slowly and are ideal for testing genetic relationships. A close match with someone who shares your surname is proof that you're related.

You could always move to Iceland.

Women are free to change their names to whatever they wish. My (now ex-) girlfriend took the opportunity after her divorce to change her surname to her mother's maiden name because her maiden name reminded her of her much-despised father. The funny thing is that her new name is a subset of her ex-husband's name, so people get a little confused by it all.
