Stupid Question Number 1 - NewsRevue

As promised here is my first stupid question.

NewsRevue - There seems to be a lot of talk about it on the site. Hence visted their website site. This has the message if you are interested in writing for us drop us an email.

Does one, drop them a line saying Hi,I am interested in writing

or does one

Drop them a line with writing attached?

Next funny line - how much could expect to be paid?

Thanks.

I just sent them a few scripts - then one got picked up for 3 weeks. That was over a year ago. Nothing since!

I suppose it helps to send regularly - get in their frame of mind because there are a few here who get several things on every week.

Do you have contact details?

Oh yes - the funny part - payment! They do pay eventually.

Just email them and ask to be put on the mailing list or send them a sketch or two and you will automatically be put on.

You will receive a running order every week, which lists all the sketches, song and jokes that made it on, along with the writers names.

Don't bother trying to earn a living of it, the money is there, but don't expect too much.

Unless you're sooty.

The only decent money I've made from NewsRevue is from having stuff in their Edinburgh show, which paid quite nicely.

Having said that, NR is a genuinely great show, a guaranteed good night out, and the people who run it are really nice, so it's a lot of fun to be involved with.

I got about £17 from the Edinburgh show last year, which apparently covered a two month run previous of the same sketch and a two week run of another sketch.

That seems very low. My experience of having 8 weeks of one sketch and 2 weeks of another has normally been around 40 quid, even just at the Canal Cafe. Are you sure that was definitely the Edinburgh run, not the mid-year "Best Of" at the Canal Cafe? I had 3 sketches and 1 gag in NR Edinburgh this year and got over 400 quid.

Oh wait... hmmm... I thought the best of was Edinburugh? I'm not 100% sure, I'll have to check it out. But is £17 for a two month run still sound normal? I emailed them and they said it was all right?

Well, they do a week of "Best Of" at the Canal Cafe before they take the show up to Edinburgh, and sometimes unfortunately things get dropped between London and Edinburgh. (I had one song dropped between London and Edinburgh this year.)

Anyway, whether it's 17 quid or 40 quid, I guess no-one's quitting their day job to write for NewsRevue.

what's the best email address to contact them on? I'm not on list, though I've requested it a couple of times. I only found out I'd had sketches taken through this forum. Blighters.

I always use mail@canalcafetheatre.com. That seems to work for me.

Ah, well. I'm sure it was 2 weeks over Christmas, I can't remember though.

I hope you're going to pay tax on that.

Just start sending, remember make it nice and easy to read.

So

1 Paste in e-mail and attach a word document.
2 Send each sketch separately.
3 Put title in subject bar and name/contact details at top of each sketch.
4 Send to director and newsrevue.
Other tips.

1 The cast change every 6 weeks, outside of the first week it's hard to get stuff in.
2 One director may like your stuff one may hate it, so don't lose heart.
