Most publications here in the States use the AP Stylebook. It says:
all right (adv.) Never alright. Hyphenate only if used colloquially as a compound modifier: He is an all-right guy.
According to the AP Stylebook:

I swear I read that alright had become the correct spelling.

I think it's more of a case of it being grudgingly accepted by some, but I don't think it's the "correct" spelling.
Another one that bugs me is "noone" onstead of "no one." Always incorrect, unless you're talking about a Hermit.
