And I'm a TV snob! Page 4

That's what I mean. Loads of brilliant songs.

Yeah yeah, me too. Don't think Messrs Cowell or Walsh have my contact details though.

They won't want ours. We're above all that. I told you in another thread what a musical snob I am.

Looking to units sold and yearly income as primary indicators of success is a very limited view. Cowell may have made a fortune from music that a bare few others could match but his impact on music will (probably) be judged by history as feeble in comparison to Bach, Mozart, or even moderns like Dylan and Lennon/McCartney.

In contrast, a prime example of a person who would pass under the radar of such limited standards of success would be Vincent Van Gogh who will never know that he became a revered artist. As far as he was aware, he died unrecognised. Yet he's now the most collectable artist. His impact in his field, in comparison to far richer artists, demonstrates real success is not about unit-shifting or contemporary acclaim.

But even the historical perspective of success is stolen from the true greats. Those giants of history will never (and can never) know the impact they had. If you live and die and that's the end, then even the memory of life dies with you. It's as if you never existed.

I think the true value of a man's worth is utterly subjective. What use is fortune and acclaim if you never met your own inner agenda and expectations? In contrast, meet your expectations and being poor and unrecognised doesn't matter. You succeeded, whatever the world says.

Ultimately success is a personal measurement. If Cowell believes he's a success then he is, whatever the judgement we or history pass. But going by the example of our most 'successful' people (who continue to acquire even when fabulously rich, who continue to snatch for more records, exposure, and sales), it seems to indicate success is a will-o-the-wisp of the human nature, something always unattainable.

And I'm with Chappers, I hate reality shows but I'm never snobby about it, just obliquely stubborn. Give me Loops documentary on China any day.
:P

Lennon was a tit, glad he's dead, etc.

(Obligatory at any mention, you see.)

Explanation unnecessary. I almost baulked at using his name as an example when considering the consequences.
;) Laughing out loud

Definitely.
No one's calling him an artist!

Quite.

So he isn't worth our column inches!

Well, not mine anyway! ;)

A number of us wouldn't be sorry if you were dead, Aaron.

A number? Most. If not all.

Yes Aaron, we all hate your guts. Clearly. Rolling eyes

Quote: zooo @ December 9 2008, 2:06 PM GMT

Yes Aaron, we all hate your guts. Especially me. I feel there's no better time than this to inform you that I despise your very flesh and wish a pox upon your 'soul'. Die, pig man, die.

Bit harsh.

Not dead necessarily, just a really bad cold?
