Gervais's speeches are probably an antithesis to all those simpering 'thank you' lists most people do.

And aren't they SUPERB!
But what he did last night was a million miles away from his early stuff with Ash and the wheel chair gags.

Mainly because it is. Has. Long ago.
Quote: zooo @ December 7 2008, 8:47 PM GMTOf *course* it's a bloody gag.
I can see how people think it's getting old though.
Is it? What's the gag, that the awards are beneath him? But they are...so where's the gag.
It's like a man with billion pounds taking the piss out of the man with a tenner then saying, "only joking".....well, you're not are you...cause you do have a million pounds!
I don't have an issue with how he accepts an award but he has to expect the backlash and that others will find it funny. Untill Skinner showed up my biggest laugh was Rick getting heckled.

Well to some people perhaps!
The only other alternatives are for him to suddenly go all 'sincere' and cheesy (not going to happen) or to not say thank you at all.
The fact he records an acceptance at all is him saying thank you. He's actually being very British by not going all genuine on us, which you should appreciate, Aaron.
I just think that any award given to you no matter how big or small should never be mugged off like the way he continually does.

I disagree...this man is regarded as one of the best comedy writers of our time.....it's not beyond him to find some humour that exists between "chessy" and "arrogant cock".
Well, let him know your grievances, I'm sure he'll get right on it.
Remember he's also a self confessed lazy bastard.
I personally would prefer he put any creative effort into his next project, not fannying about with awards speeches.
I like him, but I'm an old fashioned type, I believe even if someones buys you a Mars Bar for your birthday you should still say f**king thank you!

He didddd!
He made a little video, to (try) and make us laugh. Don't you seeeee?
didn't make me laugh or the audience by the sound of it, he is funny but only playing straight. he's made his money, good luck to him but he won't last like true comedy greats.
Well, I think he quite obviously will. But different opinions make the world go around!
Etc.
Quote: Aaron @ December 7 2008, 7:13 PM GMTI could send it to you.
Thank youuu!
But I actually just found the link to watch it (through this very site, who'd have thunk it!)
He's very limited, but clever at finding a massive audience for his style, fair play, I'm only jealous.

Greats like Jasper Carrot and Ronnie Corbett looking really uncomfortable on a not very well run show made me feel uncomfortable for them.
