NESKOWIN, Ore. -- A romantic marriage proposal on the Oregon coast turned deadly for the bride-to-be when a wave swept her out to sea. Scott Napper had taken 22-year-old Leafil Alforque to Proposal Rock near Neskowin Beach to pop the question at a place that got its name from couples ready to marry. Napper and Alforque had been dating since they met on the Internet in 2005.

But Alforque had arrived in Oregon on a visa from the Philippines just three days before the fateful trip to the coast.

Napper said the tide had receded around Proposal Rock on Saturday when the couple began to walk to it. He planned to propose and give her the ring he carried in his pocket.

About 10 feet from the rock, a wave about 3 feet high suddenly came toward them.

"I turned into it to keep from getting pulled under it," Napper said.

By the time he turned to find Alforque, only 4-foot-11 and 93 pounds, she had been caught by the receding waters.

"She was about 30 feet away, getting swept away," Napper said.

The 45-year-old Silverton man tore off his jacket to get rid of any extra weight, and when he looked up again she was gone.

"That's the last I saw of her," he said in an interview Wednesday, breaking into tears.

I read something on Sky News a few nights ago about a bank in California. Some cops were passing at night and saw someone inside, so they thought the place was being robbed. They called back up and everything and then it was discovered that it was actually a cardboard cut out.

I'm starting to think I dreamt it because nobody else I ask seems to have seen it.

A national bacon tragedy for Ireland:

All Irsh pork products will be removed from supermarket shelves today and consumers have been asked by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) to destroy all such products in their homes because of fears that animal feed used has been contaminated with harmful toxins.

The authority made the recall announcement after pig meat on a number of farms was found to have had between 80 and 200 times more dioxins that the recognised safety limit.

The recall affects all products produced since September 1st and will have very severe repercussions for the State's pork industry which is worth close to half a billion euro annually. It comes at one of the sectors busiest times of the year and was dubbed "an absolute disaster" by farming groups.

I have eaten almost a full packet of bacon and half a packet of sausages this weekend!

This amused me somewhat.

Medicare (government health insurance available to Americans over 65 or those meeting certain conditions) may soon pay for physician-prescribed handguns for patients with arthritis or other maladies which prevent them from firing a normal gun.

Stupid waste of time, but this was an unusual election and the same thing would have been tried had McCain won. He was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936 while his naval officer father was stationed there.

And the east coast wonders why we have so many jokes about them.
