You're forgetting the cost of your petrol to ours, I think. All power prices will be of a similar balance.

Petroleum fuels only 1% of the U.S. electricity needs.

Coal: 48.3%
Nuclear: 19.2%
Natural gas: 21.3%
Hydroelectric: 6.9%
Biomass, geothermal, solar, and wind generate the remainder

Just checked my latest bill and found that I paid $80 for 1000 kW/h last month. So I could run a 1kW heater for 12 hours for about $1.

I assumed that electricity isn't something that varies greatly between the UK and the U.S. as it can't be replaced by public transport or socialized medicine. I'd assume that the average electricity bill in the UK is similar to that in the U.S., but perhaps smaller due to smaller dwellings. Maybe I'm way off base.

Well we are a much smaller country.

Well we are a much smaller country.

It's easier and cheaper to distribute electricity to smaller areas than to larger areas.

So what's your average monthly electricity bill?

Here's mine (lots of Celsius-Fahrenheit-Dollars-Pounds conversions involved):

Summer months:
Average maximum temperature: 36C
Electricity (mainly air conditioning): £110
Natural gas (water heater): £11

Winter months:
Average minimum temperature: 6C
Electricity: £40
Natural gas (water heater and heating): £25

The above figures are for a newer, 2-story, 4-bedroom home of about <gets out calculator> 260 square meters.

Don't understand metres.

And I pay £50 a month electricity. Air conditioning? What's the point?

Open the doors and windows.

2800 square feet.

You should try living in the desert (105F+) or south Florida (96F with 100% humidity) without air conditioning. ;)

There's plenty of room in my back yard. And it's a balmy 23C at the moment.

I'm looking at fire pits for my deck, so soon the cold won't matter at all.

You what?

You what?

Fire pits? I was only slightly familiar with them before I moved to Texas, but I've been told that the circular seated area on my wooden deck was designed to hold a fire pit.
