Social workers sacked Page 5

I'm glad you're coming round to our way of thinking, Dolly. ;)

I also know that people who refer to 'chav scum' are often people who aspire to be middle-class. :D Don't worry, it's not that great; those Waitrose shopping bags are bloody heavy and it's quite tiring dropping the little one's off at ballet, horse riding and tennis practice.

Why is aspiring to be middle-class such a bad thing? Why is reading a book or watching a film with subtitles or eating food that's healthy for you a bad thing? Why is being mindful of your neighbours and paying taxes a bad thing? Why is wanting to live in a better house or better neighbourhood something to be sneered at?

I thought everyone was middle class now?

I am. And proud of it.

Sounds like it from Chip's description.

But you can't look down at people just because they haven't had the same advantages as you. Unless they're a midget.

And don't forget with the execption of James Bond (who is a fictional character and was a scholarship boy anyway) the really cool people are always working class. :D

Apologies. One of the disadvantages of multi-tasking.

That was just a few things off the top of my head. And also, Dolly, don't forget it's the middle-class that largely pays for the chav underclass and their children. Because they certainly don't pay for themselves.

Yeah, yeah, whatever you say...
Rolling eyes

Btw if the poor didn't reproduce where on earth are all your glamour models going to come from? :P

You're trading in stereotypes, Dolly. A lot of glamour models come from middle-class backgrounds. And I know, because I've studied the area extensively. ;)

Preeeezunctly.

And this is why I aspire to be upper class.

I suspect that we have rather varying definitions of "cool"!

Laughing out loud

Funnily enough I have both sorts of people as neighbours, the wealthier ones living closest. I haven't noticed much difference apart from their clothing. Some of the wealthy people in my neighbourhood have been known to have noisy parties, leave their dog mess, make rude comments, let their dogs bark incessantly, shout at their children in public, have badly behaved and rude children.

My family used to have a business letting out holiday homes. It was always the posh types who would trash the place, whereas the working class types would leave them spotless.

It is all about standards and respect, and those have very little to do with annual income.

Did anyone see that Channel4 documentary called something like Rich Girl, Poor Girl? They made two girls from very different backgrounds, but who lived on the same (albeit very long) South London street, spend some time together.

The rich girl really learned a lot and became ashamed of her earlier comments about all poor people being horrid and lazy. The rich girl's mother, who was apparently a teacher, also showed herself up as someone not very pleasant and bright, by making some racist comments earlier on.

Maybe they should repeat this experiment more often :)

I've also noticed that these sort of people tend not to be the ones - in my experience - that offer you seats on the tube, help carrying buggies up or down stairs, stop to let you cross the road. In my experience I've found young black and Asian males and white van men types have been the most helpful in those ways - not Mr or Mrs Middle-Class in a suit.

I travel every day on the tube, and that is what I have observed also.

I think there's still a very strong sense of decency about such things in some strong working class families - and in many black and Asian families.

Black and Asians offer you seats on public transport because they want you sitting when they detonate their suicide bombs. :P

And that's DEFINITELY not my experience.
