I got the reference and I've never seen Poltergeist.
I think references can be a good thing but if you try to do too many of them, you might as well change your surname to Wayans and assume you're never, ever going to get more than a 1 star rating for any of your films ever again.
I think it's OK to use references if they are ones where the scene or line will stand anyway, even if someone doesn't get the reference. The Simpsons used to do that quite well. Remember their Psycho reference where Maggie bops Homer on the head? It wouldn't matter if you'd never seen Psycho, the scene works anyway.
