It was funny though overall. Some obvious setting up before the actual funny bits but when they came I laughed out loud.
Relaxed and laughed with the 1st episode, such as with a best friend (which, admittedly, I don't have). Lovely to have this back. Best sitcom of its genre around. Not the greatest episode ever, but strong and well... lovely, inventive humour.
Always get the sneaking suspicion that some love to disparage anything Graham Lineham has done since 'Father Ted'. Which really isn't fair. I never get the sense that he rests on his comedy laurels. He has found his niche in fun/silly sitcom, but take a good look at his c.v. He knows how to write all styles of comedy. A treasure of a writer.
The IT Crowd is a reason to be cheerful. Looking forward to the next episode.
I liked it too. Laughed out loud a lot, rather than just chuckling too. Top marks -- keep it up!

Linehan has no trouble producing inventive and tight plotting but I think his obvious lack of knowledge of business and IT is starting to bite him in the arse. I know that the point of Reynholm Industries is that we never know what they make or do - but this is a bit of a lame gag really. Plus a few more IT related gags - "Memory IS Ram" wouldn't go amiss.
Good stuff. Not quite as rib-tickling as I'd hoped, but still head and shoulders above the competition. And the BBC would give their left testicle for an audience-sitcom as good as this.

I doubt I would get IT related gags. It is not a comedy about IT - it is a comedy about the sort of people who work in IT.
I am not sure how knowing what Reynholm industries do would provide more scope for comedy.

I don't "get" gags about films, beer, many aspects of socialising, and sport. But they're still evident in different programmes.

The first series was full of IT related gags. There were even some in the second series. Then he ran out and started telling people it wasn't a comedy about IT but a comedy about the sort of people who work in IT. Originally it was both - now it's mostly the latter.

I didn't say it would provide more scope for comedy - although it probably would - rather that it was lame not to do some work on that aspect of the show. In Friday's episode we had Matt Berry making a joke about spending the worker's pension money, but Reynholm senior already blew that last series before he killed himself. That's what I meant about biting him on the arse. There are already a few signs that the show is feeding off itself. There no humour at all in the fact that The Office is set in a paper merchant's - but it helps ground the show. Linehan isn't good at that - he clearly has no idea how a company/IT department functions and can't be bothered (or doesn't think it's important) to find out how it does.

Film gags are a bit indulgent (e.g. Spaced). Beer can be quite technical, but most of the jokes are about falling over rather than hop varieties or specific gravities.

Father Ted is clearly completely underwritten by references to the workings of the Catholic church, Saints days, Ecclesiastical protocols etc.. This is used as a trade off against the silliness - which is the principal point I am making about the IT crowd. So your sarcasm is misplaced.
