Are you Offended? Page 3

One thing I read though - it was quite interesting, a comment by an army medic from the trenches of the first world war - was that atheists always end up crying out to God just like everyone else when they're dying.

That's dead right. And for other serious problems as well, even the most vocal atheists, when they have noone left to turn to, suddenly give God a try.
Whether they care to admit or not I'm willing to bet almost everyone, maybe even everyone, has prayed for something at least once in their lives.

Sometimes when I see what some shit scumbags have done on the news or in the name of politics or whatever I find myself hoping like f**k there turns out to be a hell.

Northern people?

Mmm, Still, annoying, but not offensive.

Great. Thanks.

Pleased

I'm originally from Carlisle, which is just about as northern as you can get in England. I'm wondering if Aaron might implode if we were to meet . . .

Depends who indecipherable your speech is.

I think if I was an very impressionable person, I could view that two ways.

One, I could read it as an offensive comment against the muslim faith or faith in general which could add fuel to any negeative views I have about western culture. A personal attack onmy faith and a red flag to any hatred.

Two, it could impile to me that religion is an evil thing and while yes, their is a lot of coruption in various churches and organised religions have been used as an excuse many times to attack others, it's important to remember that this only appiles to a small percentage of people who follow a faith. When we see the nutters on the news we quickly forget about the good work others do.

I am not saying that's how I view it at all but I can see HOW it could be viewed. Does that make more sense?

Got it? Thank you for explanation.

That's just a lifetime of mental conditioning - in the UK we're all indoctrinated into religion from a very early age and religious terms are all over our language:

"Oh God!"

"For God's sake!"

"Christ, don't you ever shut up?"

All phrases I use regularly but I can absolutely assure you I have zero belief in an invisible space ghost who watches me all the time, even when I'm on the toilet. I think if I'd been shot in the face I might scream out something like:

"F**k me Jesus, that hurts!"

Wouldn't mean I'd suddenly found God.

This is a whole can of worms that's been opened many times before, but the argument never, ever reaches a satisfactory conclusion.

I'm not quite sure what to believe. I think I believe in a higher power, or "being" if you want to call it that, but I certainly don't buy into Christianity or for that matter any other religion. So I suppose that makes me an agnostic too.

One thing I read though - it was quite interesting, a comment by an army medic from the trenches of the first world war - was that atheists always end up crying out to God just like everyone else when they're dying.

Tad unfair that, if some Iraqi bastard filled me with lead I might just manage to croak; mum, God or you c**t.

None specific creator, or joining sprititual presence maybe a bit of an effort.

the notion that religion cause wars is daft....people grouping together cause wars. If you remove religion people will just find another reason to gather together.....football, down the pub, etc. Humans are just very sheep like and will always gravitate to a role where there can follow someone else (hence celebrity being so popular nowadays) Once you have people grouping, someone leading the group astray for their own objectives will often follow.

Actually...if we didnt have religion we may find MORE problems....imagine a few billion sheep that dont want to be sheep anymore!

Blaming religion is bogus for me, as a sort of aetheist.

The guys who flew on 9/11 were muslims (e.g. religious)

They were also young, angry, politically disenfranchised, horny, dismayed at US influence in their own countries, unable to get jobs etc.

Also Kim Jun Il, Stalin and Hitler managed to convince people to do beastly things with out any holy book.

Blaming religion shuts the argument down dangerously fast.

It's worth remembering in many Arab states it's the Islamists who use political lobbying, the courts and peaceful protest.

It's the secular army that kills, tortures and terrorises.

Religion's not the reason the extremists do violent things like that. But it is something they feel they can legitimately use an an excuse.

Like most judgemental hate filled arseholes.

Having read bits of Mein Kampf, the Little Red Book and The Protocols of Zion.

I can say it takes very little to inspire people to hate.

In the 70s the PLO, Red Brigade carried out similar operations to AQ and were aetheist anarchists.

As long as they were only killing religious people. ;)

As long as who were?
