Smoking

Working on a sub plot for my sitcom, with a character trying to give up smoking.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to extend the storyline or just funny jokes about it (i love that green wing episode where Caroline needs a cigarette but her lighter doesn't work, so she rips up her cigarette only to find her lighter working afterwards)

But an extended storyline would be great, not afraid to go a bit wacky!

Thanks :)

There's a good episode of Men Behaving Badly where Gary tries to give up.

There's also The Smoking Room which must have covered a lot of smoking jokes.

Patches are good, slowly puting more on through out the episode?

Watch that episode of Father Ted, cigarettes, alcohol and roller blades.

Sense of taste returning, jsut as they have to eat something horrible.

Surpressed sex drive returning.

Work place screens for drug users and their cold turkey looks suspicious.

Keep sucking on inappropriate things.

Fall in love with gross coleague cos he's got a smelly pipe.

"Patches are good, slowly puting more on through out the episode?"

already thought about patches, licking them etc...

"Surpressed sex drive returning"

Love that :) :)

"Work place screens for drug users and their cold turkey looks suspicious"

what do you mean by this?

Thanks :)

You know the office manager watches train spotting, and they're looking for some one who's twitchy sweaty etc.

Cos they'll be a drug user.

But our giver upper looks the same.

Sorry, but isn't this taking the piss a bit?

I'm with Timbo, although not so direct - am I ever?

It's okay to get pointers but you really need to get a handle on the functions that plot and subplot supply before you begin going to a draft stage. They are the skeleton on which everything stands. A firm understanding will help you develop your own ideas, without it, you'll always have to rely on others.

Try watching a show you like, analyse the scenes, work out how / where the plot / subplot beats are delivered.

:)

Yeah, if you can't think of a storyline, you might well be barking up the wrong tree with this whole writing lark!

Gully - you're going to hit on a problem if you manage to sell your sitcom but somebody on this forum has provided you with the storyline.

Just think of it in these terms:

Step 1: Get your main character up a tree.
Step 2: Chuck rocks at him.
Step 3: Get him back down out of the tree.

The way you go about that is up to you but do that and you'll have yourself a story.

okay well i didn't mean to annoy anyone, but yea i totally get what your saying actually - now i look back on my question!!

the thing is is that i make films rather than write them, but i have put quite alot of time into this because i feel really passionate about it. and i just got a bit stuck really,

thanks for the advice :)

No one's annoyed, Gully. :D

We were trying to help out, tis all.

well this seems like a very friendly forum, hope i haven't come in on the wrong note!

You're joking, not on wrong note at all.

Have you seen the film The Wars of the Roses?

As far as I remember, and it's a long time ago, so I may be misremembering, one of the warring couple's lawyers has given up smoking and framed his last unsmoked cigarette in his office, near the start of the film. But he still talks endlessly about cigarettes. Then, of course, when everything goes wrong, it makes a huge impact when he smashes the glass to smoke the cigarette.

Don't know if you can use something like that?

I thought that was Christian Slater as a monk...
