At work we now operate a "hotdesking" policy. No-one has their own space anymore, you just take whatever desk is available, assuming you can find one. "Nesting", i.e personalising your work station is deeply frowned upon. At the end of the day we have to clear our desk, including the drawers, and load our possessions into a toolbox (literally a £3.99 toolbox from B&Q), which is then locked away.
Of course, the roving profile on the PC takes so long to load, that, in the time before you can get on with any work, there is ample opportunity to clutter your desk with nick-nacks. In fact there is probably enough time to assemble a desk from flatpack. The problem is clearing it up when you want to make that quick get away...
Mind you, it could be worse; elsewhere in our Department, business consultants have been employed, at enormous cost, to tell staff exactly where, to the nearest centimetre, each item - the phone, the keypad, the stapler etc - should be placed on the desk for maximum efficiency.
The one possession I do always unpack and place on my desk each day, is a bean bag in the shape of triceratops, which was given to me "to stimulate my imagination" during a "leading the way" event - a reminder, just in case I start to wonder, that it is them who is mad, not me.
