How many series of I'm With Stupid was there?

Just one I think.

I thought there were more. On one of the BBC's self-promotional puff pieces they describe it as a hit series, but if it just got one this doesn't suggest it was a very big hit.

Robin was on the My Family writing team, and has an episode in the forthcoming series (next year).

I think the show fell between the BBC3/2 stools, and also conformed to the fate of Sitcom Talent winning pilots - ie, they get a pilot, they don't get a series. The winner of the first competition just disappeared. Danny Peak, who won the second with Bunk Bed Boys, has gone on to write episodes of 2 Pints, My Hero and My Parents are Aliens, to write I'm with Stupid, and is now working on a BBC1 show he created. Jon Brown, who was the runner up to Robin, has had a similar career path to Danny, and is extremely busy.

Ahh, very interesting to hear. Good that there's a bit of talent and success out there. I'll look out for Robin's name on the credits. :)

Re: I'm With Stupid, I barely made it through the pilot. Never even tried the series.

Any idea what happened with 10:96 though? I believe that was on in the same pilots season as Marigold.

10.96? Was that the police sitcom? I actually remember reading about it on this very site.

Yes, yes it was. :)

And I've just realised that neither it nor Marigold are in the BCG database.

I believe Jon is working all over town, good for him.

There was just the one series of Stupid.

10:96 was by Tony Burgess, who went on to write The Visit.

I'm glad you liked Marigold, Aaron. It seemed to me quite far away from being a conventional family, given that the mother is a neurotic mess, the father is emotionally absent, and the son is desperate for normality.

Yes, a far cry from the convential family, but "mother not understanding son" and "student son hating being with his family" are tired stereotypes that have been done to death.

(always a bloody student. Get a job!)

As is the scene in the record shop where the shop girl has piercings and looks disinterested with the world. Done to death. It's ALWAYS a girl with piercings who just grunts.

As is the scene where the son pictures that parents have the kind of slow, regimental sex, with idle "how was your day" chat where they'd be also listening to the Archers.
Teenagers are always shown to think like that. Done to death.

By the way... why am I the only one who says what everyone else is thinking?

However, I'm glad that Robin has work elsewhere now, but I'd really hate to see the losers of that script competition.

I'm not sure you are Mikey J. Micheal J seemed to be echoing pretty much exactly what I had to say earlier about stage directions. I like to think my prose was better mind.

:)

Fine, Mikey, but as a first script by a new writer I thought it was interesting, dark and funny.

Your prose is, as ever, impeccable Marc.

Now if only I could write some decent dialogue!

And to hijack the thread momentarily Micheal, the nectarine mashing episode of DOCTORS I was mentioning in the emotional truth thread of your blog is on next Wednesday. The 12th.

Whistling nnocently

Damn, we'll be colleging in Manchester. Summons iPlayer...

Print out that blog hand it round and watch the ep as a group and then discuss. Lol.

What a lunchtime module that would be!

:)

Fair enough. Wasn't tying to start any heated debate though. :)
I just didn't think it was that original, IMHO.

I've seen lots of great comedy of these forums, but those particular writers seem to get rejected often.
It's a funny old world.

Is it? Really? I honestly can't think of a single other example of that, before or since.

I really loathe this attitude that 100% originality is required for something to be good.
