Brand, Ross and Sachs Page 39

I'd quite like it if this current hysteria over taste and decency did hit programmes like Coming of Age.

Yes, that's one thing that surprises me... why they hasn't the Daily Mail picked up on some of the BBC's other output which is much more 'sinister' than Brand's show? Maybe they just haven't found it yet... I tell you what, they're going to have a heart attack when they tune into some of BBC Three's output and listen to DJs like Chris Moyles.

According to today's papers, Harry Hill is being lined up to replace Ross as the host of the Comedy Awards for this year (because their first choice, Graham Norton, doesn't want to do it). Weirdly I've got no opinion on if having Hill presenting a good idea or not. Guess we'll soon see.

And, just to finish off this whole Ross/Brand thing (it's getting boring now isn't it?), here's links to two of my favourite writers' thoughts on the subject:

David Mitchell: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/nov/02/bbc-british-identity-ross-brand

Charlie Brooker: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/nov/03/jonathan-ross-russell-brand

Carry On Up The Khyber was shown on Channel 4 on Sunday afternoon. It was full of bad taste, innuendo, was borderline racist and not very funny. But all those up in arms over 'taste and decency' probably find this all good old-fashioned saucy postcard humour.

Yes, but the BBC is funded entirely by the public, which is why they're so vulnerable.

On the subject of the Frankie Boyle gag about the Queen's haunted pussy. Emily Maitlis repeated the gag on Thursday's Newsnight and it was quite a turn on hearing this posh girl talk dirty. :$

I find Chris Moyles' bullying of the red-haired girl in Girls Aloud far more offensive. But then she wasn't in a much-loved sitcom....

Ricky Gervais in the The Times this weekend said (to paraphrase) Jonathan was stupid, it wasn't even funny but he was standing by him because he's a friend and at the end of the day he didn't kill anyone.

Frankly Woss could work anywhere for a quater of his BBC wedge.

It's not the BBC's job to act like a fat school boy whose dad owns the sweet shop. Giving out Mars bars to buy friends.

It's enough that Woss, Brand et al would be on TV (I bet Brand earns a lot less for Ponderland).

These people will be somewhere whatever. The BBC should be the engine and funder of innovation and filler of niches.

I'd prefer Ross, but Hill should make a pretty good fist of it.

As for the Mail not noticing some of the other BBC's output, that is strange. Although I suspect they will eventuially, if only to eke every last of mileage out of the scandal. After all, they never stopped with Michael "Pornographer in Chief" Grade until he'd gone from Channel 4.

Just the existence of Chris Moyles is thoroughly offensive.

'He's fat, he's round, he makes Scott Mills profound. He's Chrissy Moyles, he's Chrissy Moyles.'

ITV have already offered to match his BBC pay from what I understand.

I'm not defending how much the BBC pay its stars (in fact I agree with you, if ITV are going to pay for Ross, why should the BBC use up its money - our money?). The reason the BBC are paying Ross et al though is that, if they didn't have some of the top stars, their ratings would drop through the floor. Or that is their thinking. (Still waiting for Friday's ratings, but I bet the film Speed won't have rated nearly as well as Ross' show)

Here's an interesting profile of Addison Cresswell, the man who negotiated Ross' salary: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/oct/31/jonathan-ross-russell-brand1

Interestingly, with Mark Thompson's comments about not paying stars as much, Jonathan Ross may be inadvertantly responsible for forcing his fellow celebs to take pay cuts, at least in terms of future contracts. No bad thing, as none of these big conracts seem to work out. (Anyone remember Johnny Vaughn's huge deal? That went well, didn't it?)

The thing is there's great undiscovered talent, or semi discovered talent.

Spending huge wedge on getting a few bankable, populist stars is harmful and wasteful in the long run.

It's worth remembering this isn't the States where huge wages are matched by huge risk.

Here it seems to be a big payday with job security.

These mega stars cross the pond and sink without a trace.

Look at how much cutting edge TV comes from there, as opposed to what we produce.

2 He pisses an awsome talent up the wall. Comics Britannia, Incredibly Strange Film Show, The Last Resort. All amazing and now just assinine scripted gags with vapid celebs.

Absolutely. I enjoyed his Steve Ditko documentary as well.

Oh dear Christ. Please don't tell me you consider Coming Of Age to be 'sinister'?

There's a whole slate of programs that seem to be bullet proof, and I suspect it's because they're just superior.

Brass Eye, League of Gentlemen etc.

People who mocked them looked like ridiculous dimwits.

Once you get over the Morris sycophancy, Brass Eye is actually quite shit, really.

When you're a bit older you might understand why it's good and might actually find it funny. :)

Aaron being called a dimwit by you is high praise indeed.

I may even change my name to Sootyj DWAA

Carry On Up The Khyber was horrible. Like being stuck in the pub with the baldy office bore, after a few too many pints.

Is that show any good? I watch for about 5 minutes and then my eyes glaze over.

Well you'd hate it, I know that much.

What, they're going to re-make it?

Surely the implication was that I am the dimwit, and not you?

I cannot express the lack of surprise which I feel when reading that.
