I used to stomach things like lobster and stone crab claws because we had a family friend who was a fisherman and he'd fill our freezer with the things. I'd have a few bites to make him happy and then I'd give the rest to someone else. Or my cat.
I had lobster in Cuba once - couldn't get over the feeling I was just showing off.

At the recent Southampton Boat Show I discovered the joys of The Australian Pie Company - takeaways for rich people. And they come complete with mash and mushy peas!

What exactly are mushy peas? Merely what the name suggests, or is there something unique about them?

See, this pie here seems to me to be perfect. Crumbly pastry, filled the top, and portable. Big pies are all very well but portable pies are so much more accessible for the fatty on the move.

Mushy peas are dried marrowfat peas which are first soaked overnight in water and bicarbonate of soda, and then simmered with a little sugar and salt until they form a thick green lumpy soup.
Yes, they are special. With chips or pies.

They're a kind of a dried broad bean, cooked until they atain a thick soup like consistency.
Often bought in tins.
In Dorset fried in batter.
