Hee, possibly the least truthful 'thanks' I've ever read!
Quote: Timbo @ October 30 2008, 7:21 PM BSTWatching Jonathan Ross with my septagenerian mother while my preteen nieces laugh at his anal sex gags is not comfortable viewing.
What show was this on? Was it Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, which is an adult show, shown at a time when children are supposed to be in bed?

Busted!

Erm, no, it was sincere. If I make a mistake I'd like to be able to correct it.

Surely that argument would only stand up if he was complaining that his nieces HADN'T liked it, but his mother had?

Even a little comment thrown onto the internet? I know people who can help you Aaron.

I understood that he felt uncomfortable that the nieces were laughing at anal sex gags.
Quote: zooo @ October 30 2008, 7:26 PM BSTWell there's loads of comedians I don't enjoy watching with my mother!
But when she's not in the room, I manage to find them jolly amusing.
Problem is if, say, Jimmy Carr, comes on the telly I can justify, at least to myself, why he is funny; if Ross comes on I can only nod my head and agree with her that the country is going to hell in a handcart. Ross is the sort of comedian who gives smut a bad name.
I don't think of Ross as a comedian.
To me he's a presenter who I find mildly amusing.
But yes he's very rude, and I switch over if kids or older relatives are in the room.

I think "supposed to be" is the key phrase there. Personally I have always found the assumption that everyone under the age of 16 is under some sort of nine o'clock televisual curfew a little naive.
Quote: Timbo @ October 30 2008, 7:04 PM BSTMy objection was Pete complaining about people complaining about Ross being unfunny. That equally is an opinion they are entitled to.
1. To say anyone is unfunny when funny is so personal is pointless. YOU can find him unfunny, most can find him unfunny.....but until it is very likely that EVERYONE finds him unfunny.....he isn't unfunny. Hitler...yes, fair enough....a TV presenter watched by millions who laugh their pants of at him....no.
2. My issue was that people complaining about offending Sachs by letting him know that his goth/porn tits out everywhere slapper of a granddaughter slept with Brand should have no reason to comment on whether he (or his gag) was funny.....if it had been would it have been ok? Of course not.....and i can tell you this for sure because i laughed at it but still think it wasn't very nice. (I did something that i ought not ta, like having sex with your grand daughter....that gets me every time)

If "preteen" kids are watching late night shows like that then their screwed and Ross isn't going to be adding much to the pile of errors that are forming their development.

I read it to be that he felt uncomfortable because his mother wasn't. (Or more to the point, that Ross was making such comments whilst watching with his mother.)

Yes. Anything, anywhere.
Quote: Aaron @ October 30 2008, 7:44 PM BSTOh you big wimp!
I am!
If there's any possibilty of the words 'anal' or 'blow job' blasting out of the telly with my mum in the room, I mute the telly till she leaves.
Ohhhh the cringiness.
(She of course would just laugh or raise an eyebrow, but I would just die.)

And that I think was my point. Risque material should be more than mildly amusing.
I suppose I just feel Ross has been pushing the envelope, thinking he was too big a star to get pulled up, so it is amusing to see him getting his comeuppance.
Anyway, I will not object to you being amused by him on the telly, if you do not object to me being amused by him not being on the telly. As entertainment Schadenfreude beats smut anyday!

Bless you. I just sit through it, although I know one or both of my parents would almost certainly do a frown and complain in some manner.
