The meeting we all work towards...

I'm sure there are some people on this site who have been so far as a meeting with a producer of some kind.

It would handy if you could explain the process, obviously it starts by sending your script in. Were you then contacted by telephone or e-mail with regards to a meeting? What was said in that call/e-mail?

What then happened at the meeting? Were you asked to prepare anything in terms of more scripts or ideas on casting etc?

It would be great to have some insight into this.

Seefacts did a very good thread about what happens.

I'll try and find it. Or maybe the great man himself can fill you in.

EDIT:

Here it is: https://www.comedy.co.uk/forums/thread/5728

Just add:

I always do everything by email, but then you're kind of expected to ring them and chat which is nerve-wracking as I'm shit on the blower. I think the phone chat is so they can guage what you're like and that.

Then you go in for a chat, or if you're luck they take you out for lunch.

Ah yes I do remember that now.

Seefacts do you mind me asking how old you are? If not, how old are you? If you do mind, apologies.

Were you asked to prepare anything for the meeting or just turn up?

I'm 23.

I think I was asked to have some thoughts on changing the setup slightly as the original script had a media element to it that networks don't want. That's about it.

Thanks. 23, a year older than me. Sometimes I think that I would be considered too young by some big wigs, but that fact that you're 23 gives me hope.

Oh, don't think that way.

I got invited down to the Beeb at 20, but the producer left and it didn't happen.

Exactly what I'm having to contend with at the moment. The stupid thing is I know Prods don't want media elements in shows, and yet I put it in anyway! I've met producers in the flesh, but never spoken to one on the phone; I don't like talking on the phone to them, it seems more nerve wracking than a face to face.

The phone does have the useful option of allowing you to be in the nude though.

Unless it's a video phone...

God, I'm actually waiting for an answer from a producer at the moment. I stopped biting my nails some time ago and now I've started again. Eeep!

By the way, Seefacts, what happened to the script you wrote at 20? I take it didn't go anywhere or did it?

Oh, one other thing, what's considered "media?"

Mainly it means TV based things, even if its only a tiny element of the overall show they'd rather you took it out.

Yeah, it went nowhere.

It was a kids show (I still love the script) and I had a guy who wanted to develop it (he now writes for EastEnders) but another project came up and he couldn't help me out.

Script went to BBC woman who gave me extensive notes, then left the BBC. Then BBC man read it, invited me down to discuss my other work, then he left the BBC too.

Script is at the BBC kids dept via a contact, but I'm not expecting it to ever get anywhere. It was written for Trevor & Simon actually and when I sent it to them got a reply back from their agent that they wanted to attach their names to it. But that means nothing really.

Media is: TV, radio, internet, video production, TV stars, music stars - that kind of thing.

Basically that.

It wasn't about duvets was it? Because they don't do duvets. Whistling nnocently

This will probably be about the time the beeb were changing their staff over to short contracts....

Are you saying that they don't want plots to do with TV and stuff.
i.e. if Ab Fab was pitched now as a new idea, it wouldn't get in?

Or what about my idea of a Posh n Becks style couple which pokes fun at "celebrity." That wouldn't get in?

No celebs. They don't want famous people, or people who work in telly or media.

AbFab, Lead Balloon, Partridge - avoid all that. There's too many 'media' shows according to the Beeb.
