Exactly. I often put my bag(s) on the seat next to me, but am more than happy to move them if someone wants to sit down. Although why anyone would want to sit next to me I don't know, but you get the point.

I sometimes lean on the seat in front and it amazes me how often someone choses to sit in the seat in front of me even if there are several other pairs of empty seats elsewhere.
Putting your bags on the seat is really saying 'don't sit here'.

I would imagine that people generally want to stab me in the head anyway.
It doesn't necessarily put an emphasis on you though. Most people who put their bags on an empty seat move them before anyone has to ask.

Ah, but do you move you bag if someone is standing? A lot of people don't - more fool the standers I guess.
I just think that if a bus is crowded it's courtesy to move the bag so no-one has to talk to you.

Of course. Well, if they're standing anywhere near and showing the remotest interest anyway; if the only person standing is at the other end of the bus/carriage, looking the other way, and totally immersed in their paper/book, then it seems a little pointless.
