It's as soon as I press the power button. I think it already has a cheap arse fan anyway and that's got to be quite a few years old.

Go down to PC World. It's probably a lot less hassle just to get a new one, and harvest the old ones for bits to sell on eBay or something (of course wipe hard drives first, etc).

You'll get a great new setup, more stable, new components, a new warranty, and no need to go around fitting new stuff yourself.

Dare I suggest you stick Linux on your unused PCs? ... nice things like taking less than two days just to start up/shut down...

You've not been using the same Linux distros I have!

Yeah, my pc fan goes a bit mental just cos it's trying to do too much at once so maybe you're just hammering it.

Dare I suggest you stick Linux on your unused PCs? It doesn't need the meat of Windows and would be perfectly adequate for web stuff and nice things like taking less than two days just to start up/shut down...

Dan

I have a Ubuntu disc and toyed with the idea of using that. I only really use the computer to look at this site and emails anyway lol.

You'll also get the benefit of a light wallet! :P

I dunno, prices are coming down a hell of a lot now.

You've suggested that before with my laptop and I can't do it lol. I have two PCs that work, just too noisey. I'd rather buy a fan, possibly a water cooler thing (any good?).

I'll just buy a new fan but there's two fans, one on the back and one on the motherboard what they both called, so I know what I'm looking for?

:)

Spose so. Maplin are still daylight robbers though. I was in there and these two guys were looking at PC parts...I had to have a word.

A 250GB hard drive for £60!!! you can a 1TB one for that online now.

You want a heat sink fan...the other ones are usually called case fans I think, make sure you get the right diameter, or circumference or whatever unit of measurement they use...

Water coolers are alright, but pretty pointless in your situation. Just get and fit a new fan.

Er. Yeah. Well, you don't want anything to do with the one on the motherboard. Just get the big blocky one for the machine itself.

Stick Ubuntu on one of your old ones before you buy new (might as well if you're not gonna use it again). Might turn out your fan doesn't have to work as hard when it's not spending all its time worrying about security loopholes... ;)

Don't even get me started on Maplin.

Ah cool, cheers Aaron.

Cheers dude Cool

I got a new question: Just wiped the HDD and re-installed XP. Everything works great, except the annoying updates. Anyway, I need the latest video/audio drivers and for the life of me can't find the ones that I think match my erm.. things? (I don't know what I'm doing)

Can I install any video driver? I have no audio and the video is poor quality and the websites sroll weird, so I need to figure this out.

Cheers.

Do all your updates, turn off pc, remove video/audio cards (if possible), switch pc on.

Turn pc off, insert video/audi card, power up pc and let windows find drivers.

IMO.
