Yes, John Kerry was a right duffer and the Iraq war hadn't turned into quite the unmitigated disaster it would become.

The war was going quite badly in 2004 and Bush's popularity was at a low point. Now it's turned around quite nicely and the end is in sight.

Barack Obama is also a right duffer, but he's a smooth talker. That doesn't equal a great leader in my mind.

What to tolerate and where and how to a draw a line and enforce it, there's the rub! And who is to judge? The good ol' US of A may have a view on that..

It's why we have a system of laws and governments.

It's also why we have human rights.

Nope! You twat. :)

*tests the waters for how insulting you can be if you put a smiley after it*

Consider the waters tested. There are certain people who cannot be convincingly insulting and you seem to be one of those! You are similar to your pal Aaron in that respect! How can teddy bears and fluffy bunnies be considered insulting? :)

All of which is inevitably flawed and open to abuse.

Cows are the most horrible absued creatures, milked toi a painful death.

Yes, I try only to drink organic, but it has never occurred for me to check if my loafers are Soil Association certified.

And why they need to be supported and defended every day.

Do you think he stands a chance? Everything seems against him winning.

Just going to show that polls can't be trusted, this AP poll shows Obama leading McCain by one percentage point - within the margin of error.

that means Obama could be ahead by as many as 8 points or down by as many as 6

I really want Obama to win, even if just to show that America realises what they've got going on right now isn't working and they want a change, but I don't think he's going to. :(

It's gonna be a right let down. Like when Bush got another term last time.

He stands a good chance of winning and, if he does, the amount of change will be minuscule overall. A lot of people are going to be disappointed by the sameness of it all. Even his own vice presidential candidate has said as much.

Hm, I don't know enough about his policies to make proper comment; but I have pondered over whether the real reason he's being talked up so much is just because he's youngish and black.

This country is like a huge, slow-moving ship. It takes a long time to make a sharp change in direction, no matter who is at the helm.

Barack is being talked up because he's young and black, but mainly because he is NOT REPUBLICAN.

I like this guy's perspective:

You're probably right!
But like I say, I think what it would represent is more interesting and appealing than what it would actually mean practically.

Erm. Yeah. *I* know what I mean.

Obama will win. McCain Oven Chips is a bumbling buffoon and reaks of George Bush. Obama is cool as f**k, and lets be honest, that is important. America has been a laughing stock all around the world for the past 8 years thanks to Bush. Obama will finally bring back some sanity and intelligence.

Now that's just too much-no politician is cool! You have to hand in your cool boots as soon as you even think about entering that world!
