I think it would work with the guy just sat there looking around with a slightly pained expression with all the music going on around him. He then goes to a bag or briefcase and pulls out an iPod and puts his headphones on and then we see him press play and the 'silence' starts straight away as described. He then snuggles into his seat with the smile. 
I like this and despite the trickiness it could be pulled off with a little effort. [fnarr!]
