They get extremely hot for several hours and any spilled food residue is reduced to white ash that can be wiped up with a sponge. The oven door locks so that you can't open it and melt your face off.

Amen. Self-cleaning ovens are better insulated than standard ovens, so they actually save electricity most of the time.
I just read that the temperature reaches 900F (482C) during the cleaning process.

Pft I don't give a shit if it did use more leccy and caused my kids to glow , if it saves cleaning the oven bring it on.
