I think it's fairly clear that, in the long term, Thatcher's economic policies were bad? She de-regulated the economy, right?

Not totally unregulated (I don't think?), but either way, the FSA regulator was established in the late 90s under Labour. It's the way regulation has worked (or rather, hasn't) which has been the problem.
